EUGENE, Ore. — The Cougars had their first road matchups of the season this weekend. They faced Portland State on Friday and Oregon on Saturday.
"Obviously, we wanted to come away with two wins this weekend," said head coach Zack Warren. "We got the first one yesterday but couldn't collect on the second one today. Oregon played the slowere conditions better than we did today we'll need to adjust better the next time we are in a similar situation."
On Friday they picked up a win 6-1 against the Vikings. They dropped the doubles point after going 1-2 in the matches. Their two losses were tightly contested as Hardy Owen and Otto Schreiner lost 5-7 and Redd Owen and Alex Edmonston fell in a tiebreak 7-6.
In response to losing the doubles point, BYU swept the singles competition in six straight-set matches.
This win pushed the Cougars to 2-0 as they headed into their match Saturday against the Ducks.

BYU competed hard in the doubles matches. Schreiner and Goldammer dropped the first set of the day, 6-3. The Cougars battled in this one but suffered a break at 3-4, which was too much to overcome. H. Owen and Wells had a very similar set after being tied at 3-3 they suffered a break late in the set and lost, 6-3. This ended the doubles play despite the Cougars’ No. 1 pairing, Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs, still playing at 3-5.

After controlling the first, Fuchs had position in the second but suffered a break that would prove detrimental as he dropped the set. Despite losing the second, Fuchs battled back and won the third, breaking Pouatcha in the last game. Wells had a great comeback in the first set. After being down, 4-1 he tied the set at 5-5 and then won it in a tiebreak. With Errey’s response in the second set, they were forced to a ten-point tiebreak to decide the match. Wells got down early and fought back but wasn’t able to close the gap as he lost, 10-6.
This is BYU’s first loss of the season as they fall to 2-1.
"We're excited for the next challenge and road trip, which is next week on the East Coast," said Warren. "We have a great group of guys, who are hungry to get back on the court."
