Meet the Foes
The Cougars will compete against Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas and Utah in the meet. Excluding Arizona, which also competed in the Wolfpack Elite Invite earlier in the season, it will be the first time BYU has competed this season against these conference opponents.
On the men’s side, Arizona and Arizona State rank in the CSCAA Top 25, with the Wildcats sitting at No. 17 and the Sun Devils ranked at No. 2 in the nation.
On the women’s side, Arizona and Arizona State are the only teams in the meet currently ranked in the top 25, with Arizona at No. 24 and Arizona State at No. 18.
The Kansas women’s program sits at 4-1 on the season, with its sole loss coming against Nebraska in an away meet at the Devaney Center Natatorium. The Kansas men’s program will not be competing at the event.
Utah men’s swim and dive is currently 5-0 on the season, with recent wins against Hawaii and Denver, two familiar opponents for the Cougars. Additionally, the women’s program sits at 2-2 this season.
BYU
BYU is coming off a competition against Denver this past weekend, with the men’s program securing a 183-116 victory over the Pioneers. They set four El Pomar Natatorium pool records in the 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 1,000 freestyle and 200 individual medley. Max Kleinman claimed the record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.01. Tanner Nelson earned two of the records in the 1,000 freestyle (9:16.40) and 200 individual medley (1:48.51) as well.
The women’s program fell just short in the same meet, being narrowly outscored 153-146. They also set an El Pomar Natatorium pool record, with Taylor Bennett, Lily Flint, Sophie Scoville and Tatum Cooley earning a time of 1:30.07 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Bennett, Cooley and sophomore Lucy Warnick all claimed top-10 BYU finishes in the meet.
Following this weekend’s meet, BYU will host its first competition in Provo, welcoming Air Force and CMU for a double dual meet on Jan. 23-24.
