SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The BYU women’s tennis team continues its early spring slate this weekend with a pair of matches in Southern California, taking on San Diego on Friday and Cal Poly on Saturday.
BYU enters the weekend with momentum after opening the dual season 2-0 on the road at Utah Tech. The Cougars earned a 5-2 win in the morning matchup before closing the day with a 6-1 victory, marking a strong start away from home as the team begins an extended stretch of road competition to open the spring.
Friday’s matchup with San Diego features a program that has already faced early tests this season. The Toreros opened the dual slate with a 5-2 home victory over UC San Diego before facing a nationally ranked challenge on the road at No. 5 LSU, falling 4-0. BYU holds a narrow 10-9 advantage in the all-time series against San Diego, with the two teams meeting regularly in nonconference play.
Saturday’s contest against Cal Poly marks the Mustangs’ first dual match of the spring season. Cal Poly opened the year with tournament play at the Cal Winter Invitational in Berkeley, California, where it competed against players from California, Stanford and Saint Mary’s. California and Stanford both entered the season ranked in the preseason ITA national poll, providing the Mustangs early exposure to nationally competitive singles and doubles play before the start of dual action.
BYU is 1-0 all-time against Cal Poly, with the programs meeting once previously. Saturday’s match will be the first between the two teams in several seasons.
The Cougars will remain on the road through the early portion of the spring schedule and will not return to Provo until Feb. 13, when BYU opens its home slate at the Indoor Tennis Courts.
