IRVING, Texas – BYU’s AJ Dybantsa was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for a third time this season, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Dybantsa was named the Naismith Player of the Week after becoming the first freshman in program history with 40 or more points as the 6-foot-9 forward finished with a career-high 43 points in BYU’s third straight win over its rival.

He also set BYU freshman single game records in field goal makes and attempts as he went 15-of-24 from the field, 4-of-5 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He has now scored in double figures in all 19 of his collegiate games which is the fourth-most to begin a career in Big 12 history.
With his performance against the Utes, the native of Brockton, Mass. has now scored 30 or more points in a game more times than any other freshman in program history with three. He also ranks fourth on the freshman scoring list with 12 more games left in the regular season.
Dybantsa and the Cougars host No. 1 Arizona tonight at the Marriott Center. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
