PROVO, Utah — BYU gymnastics defeated No. 7 Oregon State in Friday night’s season opener in front of a crowd of over 4,000.

Three freshmen competed in their first collegiate competition tonight. Hazel Smith earned a spot in the beam lineup, Scarlett Sonnenberg competed on vault, beam and floor, and Daisy Stephenson competed on vault and floor.

Contributing to the 195.675 final score, the Cougars excelled on bars, earning a 49.150 on the event, their highest event score of the evening.

Sophomore Deb Silva competed in her first all-around at BYU, totaling a score of 37.975.

The Cougars opened the meet on vault, where freshman Stephenson earned a 9.800 to kick off the competition. A 9.800 from junior Ava Jorgensen and 9.825 from senior Kylie Eaquinto contributed to an overall vault score of 48.875.

Oregon State scored a pair of 9.800s, finishing with an overall score of 48.700 on the uneven bars.

The Cougars followed up on the bars, where they earned a total score of 49.150. Jorgensen led BYU with a 9.875. Silva earned a 9.850 in her first-ever uneven bars routine. Eaquinto also contributed with a 9.850 of her own.

As a result of two Oregon State falls on vault, BYU led 98.025-96.600 heading into the third rotation of the evening.

Junior Brynlee Andersen-Broekman stood at the helm on the beam for the Cougars, scoring a 9.875, contributing to BYU’s overall score of 48.725.

Oregon State earned a total score of 49.200 on the floor, keeping BYU ahead 146.750-145.800 at the beginning of the fourth rotation.

Eaquinto, the team’s sole senior, earned a meet-high 9.900 with her floor routine as the Cougars posted a 48.925 overall score on the event. Freshman Sonnenberg also tallied a 9.875, BYU’s second-highest score on floor. 

The Beavers totaled 48.725 on the beam, securing a 195.675-194.525 victory for BYU.
