IRVING, Texas – BYU’s AJ Dybantsa and Robert Wright III picked up Big 12 weekly honors on Monday afternoon after leading the Cougars to wins over Baylor and Colorado.
Dybantsa was named the league’s Newcomer of the Week for a second consecutive week and fifth time overall after averaging 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and two steals per game while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.
The nation’s leading scorer scored a team-high 36 points in BYU’s 99-94 win over Baylor ending the Cougars four-game losing streak. That is the second-most points scored in a game by a freshman in program history as he went 14-of-20 from the field, 1-of-4 from here and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe helping BYU pick up their first-ever win in Waco.
Dybantsa recorded the third double-double of his career in Saturday’s 90-86 overtime victory over Colorado finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. It was the 18th time this season the native of Brockton, Mass. has scored 20 points tying Danny Ainge’s freshman record for 20-point performances.
Wright III was named to the Big 12 Starting Five alongside Dybantsa as the sophomore averaged 34.5 points pregame, shooting 64.9 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from three and 78.9 percent from the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals leading BYU to a pair of wins.
The 6-foot-1 point guard was also named Dickie V’s National Player of the Week after scoring 30 points in his return to Baylor. He went 12-of-21 from the field, 2-of-5 from three and 4-of-6 from the free throw line in 40 minutes of action.

On Saturday against Colorado, Wright III scored a career-high 39 points which is tied for the ninth-most points scored in a league game in program history. He went 12-of-16 from the field and knocked down a career-high 11 free throws. He went 4-of-4 from behind the arc becoming just the fourth Cougar to make at least four 3-pointers in a conference game.
No. 23 BYU returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when the Cougars face No. 4 Arizona at McKale Center in Tucson. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT on ESPN.
