IRVING, Texas – Tayvon Kitchen earned the Big 12 Men’s track and field Co-Athlete of the week distinction after setting the school record at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, the conference announced Wednesday Afternoon.
Kitchen, in his first ever collegiate appearance in the indoor 3000-meter, finished in a BYU record setting 7:36.23. Kitchen surpassed All-American Casey Clinger’s 7:41.05 effort set in the 2025 season to take the top spot on the BYU charts and became the first ever BYU athlete to break 7:40. His performance also set the No. 8 all-time record in the NCAA as well as solidified him as the fastest true freshman to ever run the event. The true freshman finished third overall in the event.
This marks the second time the Central Point, Oregon product has received Big 12 weekly honors and the first time this season. He is also the first men’s athlete to earn the award this season.
