SAN DIEGO — BYU baseball lost a tough pitching duel, 3-0, Friday night to San Diego State in game one of the Tony Gwynn Legacy tournament at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
SDSU (4-1) scored three runs on six hits, stranding three runners, while BYU (2-3) went scoreless with three hits leaving four on base.
“I thought our pitching was real good tonight and so was SDSU,” said BYU head coach Trent Pratt. “It came down to one inning where they strung together a couple of hits and we couldn’t answer offensively. We need to come out tomorrow and be more aggressive and make better adjustments at the plate.”
SUMMARY
After three and a half scoreless innings to begin the game, SDSU broke up a no-hitter by BYU righthanded starter Garrison Sumner with three runs on two singles and a double in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead.
That’s all the scoring Aztec starter Dawson Santana would need as the junior righty went 6.2 innings, scattering just two hits for the win. SDSU reliever Aidan Russell went 2.1 innings to close out the game for the save.

• Ashton Johnson: 4.0 innings, 2 hits, no runs, 5 Ks
