CATHEDRAL CITY Calif. — BYU softball fell to Washington in its final game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, 8-3 at Big League Dreams Complex on Saturday evening.
The Cougars (3-11, 0-0 Big 12) made it a 3-2 game after one and a 4-3 contest after three, but the Huskies scored the final four runs of the ball game.
Player Highlights
- Hailey Shuler: 2-3, 2B
- Ilove’a Brittingham: 1-4, HR, 1 RBI
- Lily Owens: 1-4, HR, 1 RBI
Washington took a 3-0 in the top of the first, one it would not relinquish for the duration of the game. The Huskies three runs came on just one hit, benefitting from three walks, a trio of wild pitches and a double steal attempt.
BYU bounced back in the home half of the first as Lily Owens and Ilove’a Brittingham both launched solo homers to left center, forcing an early UW pitching change.
Adding one back in the top of the second, Washington made it 4-2 on a walk, ground out, wild pitch and single up the middle.
The Cougars made it 4-3 in the bottom of the third on a Hailey Shuler double to the center field wall, Maddie Udall-Woolley walk and Tristen Turlington fielder’s choice.
UW added a run apiece in the fifth and seventh frames to go along with a pair of runs in the sixth, including a solo homer and two-run shot. The Huskies five-run cushion was too much for BYU to come back from as the final 10 Cougars were retired in order.
On Deck
BYU will return to the state of California next week to take part in Cal State Fullerton’s Judi Garman Classic, beginning against the Titans on Thursday, Feb. 26 at noon PT.
