Gibb, Hamlin named to Big 12 Starting Five

Olivia Hamlin was named the Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Week, and Delaney Gibb was named to the Big 12 Starting Five, each receiving their second conference nod of the season.

IRVING, Texas — BYU guards Delaney Gibb and Olivia Hamlin were each named to the Big 12 Starting Five on Monday, with Hamlin also earning Co-Freshman of the Week honors. 

Monday's award marks the second time Gibb has received Big 12 Starting Five honors this season and the second time Hamlin has received a Freshman of the Week nod. The duo combined for 48 of the Cougars' 86 points in their 86-74 win over the Utes in Salt Lake City on Saturday afternoon.

Gibb had her signature performance on Saturday on the road against Utah as she bested her previous career high of 36 points, which came in a loss at Utah a year ago, with 37 points in an 86-74 win over the arch-rival Utes. Gibb rounded out the career day with five assists, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks to will the Cougars to a much-needed win.

The native of Raymond, Alberta, Canada shot a blistering 13-of-21 (61.9%) from the floor and went 5-for-8 (62.5%) from downtown in the win. The sophomore standout is just the third BYU player in the past decade to score over 35 points in a game, doing so twice in two seasons, both on the road at Utah.

The 5-foot-10 guard led the Big 12 in scoring this week with 28.5 points on 66.7 percent shooting from three, also leading the league (min. 10 attempts), 52.9 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the charity stripe. Gibb also dropped 4.5 dimes and recorded 2.5 steals per contest, both top-10 marks in the Big 12 for the week. She also tallied 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 coming on the offensive glass, and a full block per game.

With this week's 20 and 37 point outings, Gibb has moved into seventh on the all-time BYU scoring list at 17.32 points per game, passing 11-year WNBA veteran Erin Thorn (16.23). She also moved into 16th on the all-time 3-point field goals made list with 120, passing two-time WCC Player of the Year and former Texas guard Shaylee Gonzales (114). Gibb also increased her 3-point field goals per game (2.40) average and career 3-point percentage (36.1%), moving her into second and 14th, respectively. Finally, Gibb slid into sixth on the career assists per game list, averaging 4.20 dimes, again passing Gonzales for sixth place.

Olivia Hamlin averaged 13.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.0 assists on the week as the freshman helped the Cougars complete the season sweep of arch rival Utah. The native of Santa Clara, Utah, turned in a crucial 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting, knocking down two triples with three rebounds, an assist and a steal in the 86-74 win.

Earlier in the week, against Cincinnati, Hamlin scored 16 points on 7-of-18 from the field, 2-for-6 from three, with three steals, an assist and a rebound.

With her four steals on the week, Hamlin moved into seventh place on the all-time freshman steals list with 51, passing former Cougar and current Oklahoma State guard Amari Whiting. Hamlin also sits sixth in steals per game (1.82), seventh in 3-point field goals (40) and 3-point field goals per game (1.43), eighth in points scored (349) and made field goals (132), ninth in points per game (12.46) and 10th in minutes per game (28:09).

The Cougars hit the road this week to face the Arizona State Sun Devils on Wednesday, before returning to the Marriott Center to take on the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday in a Senior Day matchup.  Both games will stream on ESPN+ and air on BYU Radio (107.9 FM), BYURadio.org and the BYU Radio app, with Jason Shepherd on the call.
