INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – BYU’s AJ Dybantsa was named the USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after leading the Cougars to a 79-69 victory over No. 6 Iowa State on Saturday evening.

The freshman was also named the Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week after averaging 32.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game against a pair of Top 10 opponents last week. He also went 23-of-45 from the field, 4-of-10 from 3-point range and 14-of-17 from the free throw line.

In a 75-68 setback at No. 4 Arizona, Dybansta finished with 35 points en route to breaking BYU’s freshman single season record that had stood since 1978 when Danny Ainge scored 632 points. He made 13 of his BYU freshman single game record 28 field goal attempts while going 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

He nearly had his second triple-double of the season in the win over the Cyclones going for 29 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. He went 10-of-17 from the field, 2-of-4 from three and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe as the Cougars defeated a Top 10 team at the Marriott Center for the first time since 2020.

No. 19 BYU returns to action tonight when the Cougars host UCF at the Marriott Center. Tip is scheduled for 9 p.m. MT on ESPN2 with Mike Monaco and Miles Simon on the call.
