PROVO, Utah — Freshman BYU golfer Kihei Akina will head to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, to play in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open at Grand Reserve Golf Club on March 5-8.
Akina will be participating in his third-career PGA Tour event and making his fifth professional appearance. Akina's first two PGA tournaments were the 2024 and 2025 Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort. In 2024, the freshman missed the cut by one stroke and carded a 69-69–138 for 2-under par. Akina posted a 7-over par in two rounds in 2025.
The Utah Open winner also competed in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Utah Championship in 2024 and 2025, his other two professional starts. Akina tied for 49th in the event in 2024.
The 2025-26 season for the Alpine, Utah native includes five top-10 finishes in seven collegiate events. In two of those finishes, Akina placed top-5 in The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate and Arizona N.I.T. where he finished tied for fifth in both events.
BYU golf alumni and former third-team All-Americans Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair will join Akina in the Puerto Rico Open. It will be the 61st PGA Tour event for Fishburn and the 227th one for Blair.
