LUBBOCK, Texas – Creed Thompson was crowned champion of the 3000-meter, teammate Carter Cutting won the mile on the second day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships Saturday afternoon.
Thompson finished the 3000m race in 7:52.90, just 0.01 seconds ahead of true freshman Tayvon Kitchen, who took second with a time of 7:52.91. Thompson, a senior from Lehi, led the pack for just under half the race before taking control over the last four laps, finishing side by side with Kitchen. Isaac Hedengren, who holds the No. 3 all-time BYU record in the event, joined his teammates on the podium finishing eighth in 8:00.28.
Cutting, who helped the DMR squad secure victory a day earlier, crowned himself champion of the Big 12 Indoor mile finishing in a time of 4:05.23. The junior from Wilsonville, Oregon holds the BYU record in the mile having topped the chart earlier this month.
Jaden Roskelley finished on the podium in the Heptathlon scoring 5546 points to take sixth. Kaden Passey finished 14th with a personal-best score of 5184 points after taking first in the heptathlon 1000-meter where he crossed the line in 2:37.27. He also recorded a person-best 4.45m/14-7.25 in the heptathlon pole vault where he finished 11th.
Jonah Heimuli, who alongside Cutting secured victory in the DMR Friday afternoon, took fourth overall in the 600-yard dash in a personal best time of 1:08.96.
Tyler Poole set a personal record after he hit a mark of 16.82m/55-2.25 in the shot put where he finished 13th. Peyton Williams joined him in the event where he finished 15th after he set a season best mark of 16.74m/54-11.25.
Jacob Robison and Jake Orr each made the podium in the 800-meter after finishing fifth and eighth respectively in times of 1:49.73 and 1:50.92. Robison, a freshman from Santa Ana, California, set a personal record in his first ever collegiate performance under 1:50.
The 4x400-meter relay finished out the meet with Brayden Dahl, Garrett Copelin, Heimuli and Logan Hubler representing BYU. The Cougars relay team finished ninth in a time of 3:09.61.
The men finished fifth as a team scoring 57 points overall. Texas Tech won the meet with 125 points and Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State all finished ahead of the Cougars.
