PROVO, Utah – BYU softball was victorious in its home opener, defeating the Abilene Christian, 10–1 in five innings.

The Cougars (6–17, 0–3 Big 12) scored a season-high ten runs, all in the first three innings before the game was called early due to the five-inning run rule.

In 18 at-bats, BYU produced nine hits and ten runs, including two runs each from Danica Acosta and Maddie Udall-Woolley. Hailey Shuler also recorded a season-high four RBI.

Player Highlights

In the bottom of the first inning, Shuler hit a single up the middle, bringing Danica Acosta home from second base to give the Cougars an early lead. Bre Townsend followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Ilove'a Brittingham, extending the lead to 2–0.

With two outs in the second, Shuler hit her second home run of the season, driving in Udall-Woolley and Acosta.

The Cougars extended their lead in the third inning when Udall-Woolley hit a line drive to center field, bringing home Rita Tavita. The very next batter, Kaiya Fabela, followed with a nearly identical hit, scoring Townsend for her third run of the season.

Leading 7–0, Lily Owens hit her fourth home run of the season deep to left field, bringing in two more runs and giving BYU five runs in the inning.

In the fourth inning, the Wildcats got on the board with a home run to left field. However, the Cougars held them scoreless for the remainder of the game, securing the 10–1 win by the five-inning run rule.

The Cougars will return to the road for the Trailblazer Classic, playing three games at Utah Tech, starting against Omaha on Friday, March 13 at 11 a.m. MDT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
