STANFORD, Calif. — No. 23 men’s golf (275-273–548) finished day two tied for first at 12-under par after a 7-under par second round of The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course on Friday.
“We started off a little slow today, but like yesterday, we stuck to our process and putts started to drop,” director of golf Todd Miller said. “I was blown away at a few of the really difficult putts I saw drop.”
Alongside the Cougars at the top is UCLA (276-272–548), who posted a tournament-best 8-under-par round two. Long Beach State (270-279–549) and Stanford (269-280–549) share the third spot at 11-under par followed by fifth-place New Mexico (271-279–550) at 10-under par to round out the top-5.
Kihei Akina (66-66–132) jumped up to a share of second after copying his round-one score of 4-under par on Friday. Akina currently sits at 8-under par and will look to contend for his third straight individual title.
Simon Kwon (69-68–137) finished the day at 3-under par and tied for 13th. Kwon had a hot start in his second round by making five birdies in his first 13 holes.
“We stayed patient and let the birdies come to us,” Kwon said. “We played very similarly to yesterday, but we made a few more putts. We drove it pretty mediocre, but we found a way to still score well. My putter felt good today. I made a couple errors off the tee, but I’m looking to hit some good drives tomorrow.”
Peter Kim (69-70–139) ended up tied for 22nd at 1-under par with one round to go.
Angus Klintworth (71-69–140) flashed with an eagle on hole seven on his way to a share of 28th at even par.
Tyson Shelley (75-71–146) carded a 1-over-par in round two to sit tied for 99th at 6-over par.
“If the guys continue to find the fairway off the tee tomorrow, I am confident we will have a chance to win down the stretch,” Miller said. “I feel like the team has a lot of trust in each other which allows you to stay in the game even when things get tough.”
BYU will look to stay on top in Stanford and tee off Saturday at 9 a.m. MDT. Follow live scoring on Scoreboard, with live updates on Instagram and X.
