SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — No. 24 BYU gymnastics took home a second place finish in Saturday’s tri meet against Utah and West Virginia, scoring a 196.550.

No. 12 Utah took home the victory with a 197.650 and West Virginia rounded out the group with a 195.300. 

Senior Kylie Eaquinto competed in the all-around for the third time this season, scoring a career-high 39.350. 

BYU’s Alilah Alvarado, Scarlett Sonnenberg and Brynlee Andersen-Broekman shared the top spot on beam with three other gymnasts, each scoring a 9.875.

The Cougars opened Saturday’s matinee showdown on the balance beam. Freshman Scarlett Sonnenberg started BYU off with a new career-high score of 9.875. After a fall in the second spot, Alvarado and Andersen-Broekman added a pair of 9.875s. Competing on beam for just her third time this season, Eaquinto scored a 9.800. Chloee Hoke closed out the first rotation with a 9.850, giving the Cougars a 49.275 beam score, their second-highest beam total of the season.

Utah took an early lead with a 49.500 on vault, while West Virginia scored a 48.700 on bars to round out the first rotation.

Sonnenberg and Andersen-Broekman opened the floor rotation with a pair of 9.825s. Eaquinto added a 9.875 before Mya Kirkham rounded out the lineup with a 9.800, giving BYU a 49.100 team score on floor.

At the midway point, Utah held the lead with a 99.000, followed by BYU’s 98.375 and West Virginia’s 97.475.

BYU’s vaulters soared in the third rotation. Kirkham posted a 9.800 before Sonnenberg earned a 9.825. The Cougars finished strong with a 9.800 from Ava Jorgensen and a 9.850 from Eaquinto, totaling a 49.025 on vault.

Heading into the final rotation, Utah led the pack with a 148.150, while BYU sat in second with a 147.400, followed by the Mountaineers at 146.350.

The Cougars closed the competition on the uneven bars. Kirkham and Addilyn Glazier opened with a pair of 9.775s before Deb Silva posted a 9.850. Eaquinto followed with a 9.825 before Jorgensen tied her career high with a 9.900. Alvarado rounded out the lineup with a 9.800, giving BYU a 49.150 on bars and tying a season high on the apparatus.
