PROVO, Utah — BYU baseball fell to Cal Baptist 11-7 in the final game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

The Lancers (14-3) put up 10 unanswered runs in innings three through five after the Cougars (6-8) took a 3-0 lead in the second. BYU put up four runs in the fifth, but was unable to cut the deficit any further

The Cougars tallied 13 hits in the seven-run effort, which included four hits from Bryker Hurdsman, including a three-run shot over the centerfield wall. Cal Baptist had 14 hits that led to its 11 runs.

SUMMARY

Luke Anderson drove in the first runs of the game in the second inning with a bases clearing three-run triple to right after the Lancer right fielder failed to come up with a diving catch. The drive scored Matt Hansen, Hurdsman and Cooper Jones to put the Cougars up 3-0. 

Cal Baptist countered in the third inning with a three-run blast scraping over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 3-3. 

The Lancers plate four runs on four hits to take a 7-3 lead in the top of the fouth, including two Cal Baptist runs that came on wild pitches. 

The Lancers tacked on three more runs on three hits in the fifth to make the deficit 10-3 for BYU.

The Cougars led off the bottom half of the frame with a bloop double by Ryder Robinson. Hansen grounded into a 5-4 fielder’s choice that scored Robinson. Eastomn Jones then singled to left and Hurdsman crushed his three-run hommer, cutting the gap to 10-7. 

After a scoreless sixth and seventh innings, the Lancers had an RBI double to left which pushed the lead to 11-7.

The Cougars failed to muster up a ninth inning comeback as the contest came to a close with an 11-7 Cal Baptist win.
