SALT LAKE CITY — In its final match of the regular season, No. 72 BYU men’s tennis fell 4-3 to the Utah Utes on Saturday evening at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. This draws an end to the 2025-26 men's tennis season as the Big 12 Championships will only the top six teams this year in Orlando. Ending with a 13-9 record, the Cougars had their best season since 2021 where they compiled 14 wins.

Despite the result, BYU saw a pair of singles breakthroughs, as Caden Hasler earned his second Big 12 singles win of his career, while Adam Chodur picked up his first in conference play this season with a win at the No. 1 singles position.

In doubles, the Utes struck first on the No. 3 court, but Otto Schreiner and Chodur responded, rallying from a 4-2 deficit to win 6-4 and even the point. Attention then turned to TJ Wells and Tygen Goldammer to decide the opening point. The pair trailed throughout but exchanged games, tying the score six separate times to force a tiebreak at 6-6. In the race to seven, Wells and Goldammer battled back from a 3-1 deficit, taking their first lead at 4-3. Utah evened it at 5-5 before the BYU duo claimed the final two points to secure the doubles point for the Cougars.

Leading 1-0 heading into singles, Utah responded quickly, taking five of the first six sets. Hasler provided the lone opening-set win for BYU, holding off a comeback from Balthazar Huss — who rallied from 4-1 down to tie it at 4-4 — before Hasler closed out the set 7-5.

Redd Owen, making his first singles appearance since early March, dropped the first set 6-0 but opened the second with three straight points before ultimately falling 6-3. Utah added straight-set wins over Yubel Ubri, who fell 6-3, 6-3, and David Duong, who saw a 5-0 lead disappear after dropping five consecutive games. After regaining the lead at 6-5, Duong fell in a tiebreak, giving Utah the court and a 3-1 advantage with a 7-6 win.

Needing to win out, Goldammer kept BYU alive, rallying from a 5-3 deficit with back-to-back deuce wins to even the set at 5-5. He forced a tiebreak at 6-6 and, after trailing 4-2, battled back to even it at 7-7 before securing a 9-7 tiebreak victory.

Rebounding from a second set loss, Hasler followed with a 6-3 win to cut the deficit to 3-2. Chodur then evened the match, coming back from 5-4 down to win 7-5, taking the final three games which were all decided on deuce points.

With the match on the line, attention turned to the final court. After falling behind 4-1, Goldammer rallied to close the gap to 4-3 but ultimately dropped the set 6-3, sealing the 4-3 victory for Utah.
