IRIVING, Texas – Jane Hedengren was named the Big 12 Track & Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Just two weeks after breaking the NCAA 10,000m record, Hedengren ran 14:50.50 in the 5000m to break Florida’s Parker Valby’s NCAA record by more than a second. She took control from the start and steadily pulled away, opening a decisive gap over the final 2000m. The Provo, Utah product crossed the line more than eight seconds ahead of the field. The performance marked her fourth school record and third NCAA record, including the indoor season, and currently ranks No. 2 in the world outdoors.
Hedengren has now garnered three Big 12 weekly awards across the track & field season. To view the full release, visit the Big 12 website.
