BYU defeats Utah Valley 13-3 in seven innings

The Cougars scored seven runs in the fourth inning vaulting them to a 2-0 season sweep over the Wolverines Tuesday night at Miller Field.

PROVO, Utah – BYU wrapped up its non-conference regular season with a 13-3 seven inning win over Utah Valley on Tuesday night at Larry H. Miller Field. 

“It means a lot to win this one.” Ezra McNaughton said, “We need all the momentum we can going into the weekend series against Kansas. Playing a team like Utah Valley that is just down the road always gets the energy going. The in-state games are a lot of fun to play in.”

BYU (26-25, 13-14 Big 12) outhit UVU (16-36, 2-13 WAC) 13-8 to win the game in seven innings behind a fourth inning surge of seven runs.

Summary
The Cougars opened the game with a double play before allowing a UVU solo home run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Luke Anderson singles to right field and McNaughton followed with a home run off the video board in right field to give BYU a 2-1 lead.

Robinson then walked before Easton Jones singled to left center allowing Robinson to advance to third with Jones moving to second on the throw. Crew McChesney loaded the bases on a hit by a pitch, setting up Hansen two-run RBI single to left field that sent Robinson and Jones home to extend the Cougars lead to 4-1.

After a scoreless second, UVU put runners on first and second base to open the third inning. A ground ball advanced both runs up a base where the Wolverines picked up a run on a wild pitch to cut the Cougar advantage to 4-2.

After holding the Wolverines scoreless in the fourth Hansen walked and scored on a Goff RBI double to deep left field putting BYU up 5-2. Hurdsman was then hit by a pitch and an Anderson single loaded the bases. McNaughton then hit a sacrifice fly to score Goff, and Hurdsman and Anderson advanced a base on a throwing error. Robinson then deleivered an RBI single into left field, sending Hurdsman home and Anderson to third to push the BYU lead to 7-2.

A wild pitch then scored Anderson for another run and Robinson stole third base on the next pitch. Following an Easton Jones walk, Wolfgramm then hit one to deep left center to score Robinson and Jones with an RBI double, extending the BYU lead 10-2. Wolfgramm advanced to second on a wild pitch where he scored on a RBI single from Hansen into shallow left field.

UVU got a run back in the fifth inning on a 441-foot solor home run over the left field scoreboard to make the score 11-3. 

In the top of the sixth Wolfgramm made a diving catch while sprinting in deep center field helping hold the Wolverines scoreless in the inning. In the bottom of the inning with two outs, McChesney hit a double to right field and scored on a Wolfgramm RBI single to left field to extend the Cougar lead to 12-3.

Hansen then walked before Goff singled to left field, sending Wolfgramm home from second just beating the throw from the outfield, extending the lead into double digits with BYU leading 13-3.

BYU then ended the game in the top of the seventh holding the Wolverines scoreless in the inning ending the game in a ten run rule.

BYU welcomes No. 17 ranked Kansas to Provo, May 14-16, for the final regular-season Big 12 series of the year. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
