BYU Baseball earns multiple Big 12 Academic honors

A total of 20 members of the BYU baseball team were honored with Big 12 Conference academic awards.

IRVING, Texas — A total of 21 members of the BYU baseball team were honored with 24 academic awards today by the Big 12 Conference, including the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, Big 12 Spring Academic Team and Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. 

2026 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award

Three Cougars received the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Conference’s highest academic honor — Bryker Hurdsman, Ashton Johnson and Ryker Schow.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have lettered at least once, earned at least 90 hours of academic credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 or above. Johnson and Hurdsman were both repeat selections, having also earned the Gerald Lage Academic Award in 2025.

Ashton Johnson
A senior from Holladay, Utah, Johnson is a neuroscience major with a 3.80 cumulative GPA. He will graduate in Spring 2027, having completed all the prerequisites for medical school. Johnson was recently named the Big 12 Conference Baseball Scholar Athlete of the Year for his performance on the field and in the classroom. He was also recently named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators for a second-straight year.
Over two seasons at BYU, the lefthander appeared in 47 games with a 6-6 record and seven saves. He finished his Cougar career with an ERA of 3.75 over 98 1/3 innings with 80 strikeouts. As a senior in 2026, Johnson appeared in 23 games and finished the regular season tied for third in the Big 12 in games finished with 14 and was eighth in saves with 5.
In May, Johnson was named to the Starting Nine of the 2026 Tony Gwynn Community Service Trophy and was a finalist for the national award. The Gwynn Trophy honors collegiate baseball student-athletes who are active in their community and represent their programs with integrity, while excelling in the classroom and on the field.

Bryker Hurdsman
Hurdsman led the Cougar baseball team with a cumulative GPA of 3.93 and graduated in April with a degree in public health. The senior outfielder from St. George, Utah, was also recently named Academic All-District by College Sports Communicators for a second-straight year.

As a three-year starter for the Cougars from 2024-26, Hurdsman played in 164 games, with 150 starts. He was named Academic All-Big 12 twice and was the recipient of the BYU Cameron Tucket Award in January 2026. Before transferring to BYU in 2024, he played in 25 games at Utah Tech as a freshman in 2023, where he hit .299 with 19 runs and 16 RBI. Over his four-year career, Hurdsman hit .301 with 17 home runs, 42 doubles, 96 RBI and scored 117 runs. 

Ryker Schow
A junior from Pleasant Grove, Utah, Schow is a pre-business major with a cumulative GPA of 3.89. Over three seasons he has appeared in 89 games with 55 starts in the outfield and at designated hitter. Schow has a career batting average of .247 with 48 runs scored, 31 RBI, six home runs, two triples and seven doubles. He also has an OBP of .366 and a slugging percentage of .394. 

Spring All-Academic Team

BYU baseball had 18 student-athletes earn spots on the Big 12 Spring All-Academic Team.

To qualify for the Spring Academic Team, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.20 GPA or higher and must have participated in 20-percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen are not eligible, while transfers in their first year of academic residence are eligible. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

2025-26 Academic All-Rookie Team

Additionally, freshman Tyler Ball, Cooper Jones and Austin Park were named to the Big 12 Conference Academic All-Rookie Team.

Student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen who have completed 24 semester hours of coursework while achieving a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA season. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
