MIDWAY, Utah – BYU men’s golfers David Liechty and Jackson Mauss were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 128th Utah State Amateur Championship on Friday, ending the Cougars’ run in the tournament.

Liechty faced reigning Utah State Amateur champion Bowen Mauss in a back-and-forth match. Liechty won holes one and five to start the round before Bowen Mauss answered with victories on No. 7 and 8. Despite Liechty’s 1-up lead after hole 14, Bowen Mauss forced extra holes with a win on hole 18 before securing the match on the 19th hole.

Jackson Mauss fell into an early deficit after Cameron Crawford won holes one, six, seven and eight. Despite the early struggles, the rising sophomore responded with victories on holes nine, 10, 16 and 18 to tie the match. After five extra holes, Crawford prevailed on the 23rd hole.

Despite the losses, Liechty and Jackson Mauss’ quarterfinal appearances marked the Cougars’ deepest run in this year’s championship.

Bowen Mauss advanced to the championship match with a semifinal victory, while a strong performance on the back nine in the semifinals earned Crawford the other finals berth. The 36-hole final will be played Saturday, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
