PROVO, Utah – Robert Wright III is back.
After having entered the transfer portal last week, Wright has now announced that he will be back at BYU to suit up for the Cougars for his junior season in 2026-27.
“Rob is the best point guard in college basketball,” BYU head men’s basketball coach Kevin Young said. “He is poised to lead our team as the floor general and help be an extension of our staff. I’m looking forward to continuing to coach Rob and help him develop his game.”
The sophomore guard became the second player in Big 12 history to average at least 18.0 points and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 45.0 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three and 80.0 percent from the free throw line in a single season.
He scored in double figures 32 times in 2025-26, including a pair of 30-point performances en route to averaging a career-high 18.1 points per game. His 632 points are the 20th most scored in a single season in program history.
The Wilmington, Del. native scored a career-high 39 points in BYU’s overtime victory over Colorado on Valentine’s Day going 12-of-16 from the field, 4-of-4 from three and 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. Three of his most memorable points as a Cougar came in a comeback victory over Clemson at Madison Square Garden where he nailed a buzzer beater.

He was also a part of the top trio scoring in Big 12 history with AJ Dybantsa and Richie Saunders as their 1,977 combined points were 28 more than Kevin Durrant, A.J. Abrams and D.J. Augustin had for Texas during the 2006-07 season.
The Third Team All-Big 12 guard’s 162 assists are tied for the 10th most in a single season in program history. He recorded a pair of point/assist double-doubles, highlighted by a 10-point, 11-assist performance in a 28-point victory over No. 23 Wisconsin at the Delta Center. That is the most assists by a Cougar against a ranked opponent since 1996-97.
