- While playing for Grace M. Davis High, Michael compiled a 60-3 record
- Won the Northern California Valley singles championships in 1977 and 1978
- Graduated from high school with honors, earning a 3.8 GPA
- Transferred to BYU from Canada College in California where he had a 20-5 record in doubles play
- Was Northern California JC doubles champ and a finalist in the U.S. Amateur Hardcourt Championships
