At BYU he will be in charge of the catchers and will help with the hitters.

In 2008 he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in exercise science, with an emphasis in physical education.

Prior to BYU
Prepped at Spanish Fork High where he was coached by his father Jim "Shoe" Nelson. He was a three-time first team all-state and all-region selection who batted .440. He was a TPX All-American in Collegiate Baseball magazine and runner-up defensive player of the year by Collegiate Baseball magazine.
Playing Career
At BYU he was selected Second Team All-Mountain West Conference and batted .351 in league games to lead the team with eight doubles in MWC action. Prior to coming to BYU Nelson played at Utah Valley State College and Salt Lake Community College.
Career Highlights
From 2006-07 served as a volunteer assistant at Utah Valley University where he was in charge of catchers and helped with hitting.
From 2007-08 served as the Director of Baseball Operations at BYU.
In 2008-January of 2009 he returned to Utah Valley University as the second assistant coach and was in charge of catchers, helped with hitting, and helped organize and run camps for the baseball program.
In January 2009 he took a teaching job at Spanish Fork Junior High, where he teaches Physical Education. During the spring of 2009 he served as an assistant coach at Spanish Fork High School, where they posted a 23-4 record and were Utah's 5A-State Champions. He was the hitting/catching coach for the Dons. As a team Spanish Fork posted a batting average of .357, which is the highest team batting average in school history.
Played summer ball for the Pueblo Chieftains in Colorado and for Arizona Baseball Academy. He has played in the NBC World Series, once with a team which placed fourth out of 48 squads.
