Head Coach Highlights
- Was appointed the women’s basketball head coach in the fall of 1977
- In the 12 years at the helm of the women’s program, compiled a 219-124 record
- During his first year, he guided the team to an undefeated conference season with a 13-0 record finishing with a 22-6 overall mark, the best in school history at that time. The team won the Region VII Championships, a first since the 1971-72 campaign. BYU would go on to play in its first ever-national playoff berth assigned to the West Section playing two games. In their first contest, they battled UCLA eventually losing 102-57. The team battled back in the second game defeating the University of Washington 68-58
- Under Leishman, the Cougars won five additional conference crowns (a total of six), finished second twice, third two times and fourth once
- Leishman’s teams competed in postseason national tournaments in six of his 11 seasons with the BYU program
- He had 20-plus wins in five seasons, picking up 24 victories twice (the 1981-82 and 1979-80 campaigns)
- Was a Top 20 Stayfree Coach of the Year Finalist in 1980
- Was named HCAC Co-Coach of the Year in 1985
- Garnered two American Women’s Sport Foundation (AWSF) All-America Honor Roll citations in 1985 and 1987

- Has B.S. degree from Utah State and a M.S. and EdD from BYU
- From Wellsville, Utah
- Coached boy’s football, baseball and basketball in Malad, Idaho
- Coached at Brigham Young High School in Provo, compiling a 82-31 record
- Was an assistant coached for BYU’s men’s varsity team assigned to supervise academic eligibility, scouting and recruiting
- In 1977 coached the men’s basketball team at the University of Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela
