Soft-spoken Dave Crowton became the head baseball coach at BYU in 1952. A former baseball, basketball and football player he served with the freshman and prep players.
In his prep days, Crowton played end for Granite High School for two years, and he captained Granite's championship football team in 1930, the year he graduated. He played basketball for BYU from 1935-36.
From 1938 to 1948 Crowton took over the coaching duties at B.Y. High School. His efforts paid off in a regional championship in 1941 and the state crown in 1948. The following year he joined the BYU football coaching staff. He taught physiology and eugenics, and he served as head coach for football and basketball. His 1947-1948 BYH basketball team won the championship for Class B schools.
Crowton was born in Salt Lake City. He attended Utah State University for a time and then graduated with his B.S. from Brigham Young University.
At BYU he served in various positions such as assistant football coach, head baseball coach, and head golf coach.
During World War II, he served at the Topaz Japanese Relocation Center, from 1942-1944, as a teacher and sports director.
He married Louise Harris and they are the parents of three children.
