Ryan Roberts

Ryan Roberts, an Orem native, enters his seventh year as an assistant baseball coach for BYU, his alma mater.

Before coming to BYU, Roberts spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Utah Valley State College. He helped the Wolverines to a 190-145-1 record during that time. In 2005, Roberts' efforts helped BYU lead the nation in doubles and slugging.

"I'm really excited to be working with someone who is enthusiastic and hard-working like Ryan," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "He has a great deal of knowledge of the game and has been very successful."

At BYU he hit .356 as a junior in 1995 and .395 in 1996 with 23 home runs as the leadoff hitter for the Cougars. As a third baseman, he was named first-team All-Western Athletic Conference Eastern Division. He ranked third in the NCAA in homers and fourth in RBI as a senior. He scored a record-setting 53 runs in WAC games and was twice named WAC Player of the Week. He set BYU records with six hits in one game against Wyoming, including four home runs. He was a third-team selection on the Smith Super Team chosen by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Roberts played one season in the minor leagues with the St. Louis Cardinal organization, splitting time between Peoria, Ill., and New Jersey in 1996. He was drafted by the Florida Marlins after his junior year and by the Chicago White Sox in 1994.

As a UVSC player, he set several records in 1993 and 1994. He is the only UVSC player ever to hit for the cycle in a game. He hit 14 homers and had 14 steals in 1994. He also has UVSC's second longest hitting streak, hitting safely in 18 straight games in 1994. He was named first-team All-Region after compiling a .393 career batting average.

Roberts was all-region in baseball and basketball at Mountain View High School in Orem. He was all-state, team captain and team MVP as a shortstop.

Roberts and his wife Angela, a former Idaho State and UVSC volleyball player, have two daughters and two sons.

He received a master's degree in health and physical education from Utah State University.
