Years as Head Coach
- Appointed BYU women’s basketball head coach in the spring of 1997
- Complied a 72-49 record in four seasons at the helm of the women’s basketball program
- During his tenure, the Cougar team competed in a postseason tournament in three of his four seasons (once in the NCAA and twice in the WNIT)
- With a 22-9 record at the end of the 1999-00 season, Shippen guided the BYU team to its first 20-plus-win season in seven years
- In conference play under Shippen, the Cougars had one second place finish, two third place finishes and placed fifth once playing two seasons in the WAC and two in the MWC
Personal
- In 1990 graduated from Colorado State University with a B. S. degree in Science. Completed a master’s of Science degree with an emphasis on sports management from the University of Utah in 1992
- A Menan, Idaho native
- Served an LDS mission to England Coventry
- From 1994-97 was the head women’s basketball coach at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho where he compiled a 71-26 record
- During the 1994-95 season guided the Vikings to a fifth place finish in the National Junior College Tournament
- Named Region 18 Coach of the Year in 1995 and received the Alberta Lee Cox Sportsmanship Award at the NJCAA Tournament
- He played college hoops at Ricks College and at Colorado State University
- Garnered All-Region 18 Honors his sophomore year at Ricks and was a member of the 1983-84 Viking team that placed sixth at the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas
- While at Colorado State he helped the Rams place third in the postseason NIT, where he set the Madison Square Garden single-game record with six three-pointers
- He was on the CSU 1989 team that won the league title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament
- Named Academic All-WAC and averaged 7.8 points and 2.9 assists
