BERKELEY -- Key pitching by Ryan Adams and Jeff Stone led BYU to a 2-1 victory Thursday over Cal-Berkeley, who suffered its first loss.
Adams started the game and surrendered only two hits and one unearned run through five innings to earn his second victory of the season. Stone, making his second appearance since rehabilitating his elbow, picked up the first save of his college career.
Neither team recorded an extra base hit, but Cal's three errors contributed to the Bears' loss.
The Cougars scored both their runs in the fourth inning when Shane Belliston led off with a single and scored when the next batter, Matt Carson was safe after an error by Cal's third baseman. Carson scored on the next play when Seth King grounded out to the shortstop.
BYU's record is now 5-3 as it readies for Friday afternoon's game at Cal-Berkeley. In game two of the series, the Cougars are scheduled to start Jeff Stearman against the Bears, who have a 3-1 record.
