PROVO -- Junior Kevin Bills stole the spotlight from the seniors in Brigham Young's final home game of the season with his two home run performance in a 13-2 victory over Southern Utah on Tuesday.
BYU improves to 26-21 on the season. The Cougars are 7-3 in their last 10 games. SUU falls to 15-27.
"These two games worked out exactly how I would've scripted it," BYU Head Coach Vance Law said. "We were able to give guys additional work when they usually don't get to play a lot."
In the second inning, senior Jake Stubblefield hit his first of two leadoff doubles in the game and scored the tying run to make the score 1-1. He finished his final home game in front of 1,711 fans at Larry H. Miller Field by going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Two errors by the Thunderbirds in the third allowed Brock Jacobsen to hustle around the base paths to score the go-ahead run.
Senior Jason Garcia picked-up his first win of the season, going five innings and striking out four.
Bills sent the ball around the flagpole in right center for his first home run of the season. Coming into the game, he was 4-for-30 with one extra base hit.
"I finally relaxed," Bills said. "I was pressing too much before, and since that wasn't working I decided to take a different approach."
Another inning of poor fielding by the Thunderbirds loaded the bases for Bills who cleared them with a grand slam for his second home run of the game. Bills went 2-for-3 with six RBI.
Clayton Carson, pinch hitting for Kainoa Obrey, capped off BYU's scoring with a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
BYU's Clayton Barnes came in to pitch in relief and in two innings of work struck out four.
Seniors Doug Jackson, Stubblefield, Mike Weingarten, Tyler Dabo and Garcia were honored before the game with BYU blankets.
"I'm pleased with the performance of our seniors in their final game," coach Law said. "I'm going to miss those guys."
Casey Cloward will look to break the season-high 18-game hitting streak by Ryan Chambers on the road against Air Force this week. Fans can listen to the first game against the Falcons on Thursday at 2 p.m. on 960 AM.
