Spokane, Wash. (February 28, 2008)--Gonzaga scored in every inning Thursday to win its first game of the season with a 19-12 victory over BYU's baseball team.
BYU took an early 4-0 lead starting when it manufactured its first run as Sean McNaughton singled, stole second and scored off Steve Parker's single. Parker advanced on Kasey Ko's single and scored off Bryce Ayoso's single. Ko and Ayoso both scored off Jonathan Cluff's single to take a 4-0 lead after the Cougars' first at bat.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a one-out solo homer by Jason Chatwood and then loaded the bases before a Cougar doubleplay ended the first inning, 4-1.
Chatwood belted a two-run homer in the second, followed by a solo dinger from TysonVan Winkle to put Gonzaga up 5-4 in the second.
Byron Winston knocked BYU starter Jake Wortham out of the game with a three-run homer in the third to put the Zags up 8-4. Wortham was replaced by Washington freshman Tyler Westensee, who was replaced by Llyr Christensen in the fourth.
A pair of sacrifice flies by Ayoso and Cluff brought in Parker and Ko in the sixth to close the game, 13-6. Christensen was replaced by Daniel Welch in the seventh.
BYU's Kent Walton extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games with a seventh-inning double. McNaughton was thrown on Walton's double in a six-assist effort by the Bulldogs. Walton and Danny Vargas both scored on the next batter when Parker doubled down the leftfield line, to make it 15-9.
The Cougars cranked out three runs in the eighth when they loaded the bases, making the score 17-12.
Welch warmed up ready to begin the bottom of the eighth inning, but was hit by an errant throw from catcher Chad Nacapoy and was forced to leave the game in favor of J.C. Leach on the mound.
The Zags take a 1-4 record against BYU's 1-3 mark into Friday's doubleheader which begins at noon PST.
