Cedar City (April 2, 2008)--Southern Utah jumped out to a 14-0 lead Wednesday through two innings over BYU's baseball team and built upon that foundation for an 18-6 victory.
BYU used 24 players, including six pitchers, as its record fell to 12-16 overall, while the T-Birds improved to 11-11. BYU substituted at every position in the game.
The victory enabled former Cougar Alec Reichle to get his first win of the season. BYU got off to a rocky start when SUU scored its first run off a double steal, then cleared the bases with a double in the first inning to take a 6-0 lead.
The best the Cougars could muster was a three-run fifth inning when it loaded the bases, started by a lead-off double from Steve Parker. Parker's double was one of three for BYU, which gave up 23 hits to the T-Birds. BYU's Sean McNaughton, whose third-inning double went for naught, extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games.
The Cougars try to end the six-game skid as they return to Mountain West Conference action on Thursday at UNLV in a game that begins at 7 p.m. PDT.
