Las Vegas (April 3, 2008)--J.T. Musso hit a three-run homer over the leftfield fence in the 10th inning Thursday night to lift BYU to a 10-7 victory over UNLV.
The Cougar victory snapped a six-game losing streak as it returned to Mountain West Conference action, knocking UNLV out of second-place as both teams are now 4-3 in league play.
It was huge," said Musso of his homer. "I looked for my pitch, a fastball up. Everything we do builds up to conference play and tonight's victory epitomizes what we do. The way Jordan (Muir) threw tonight reminded me of his freshman year, he just dominated."
Jordan Muir, a junior from Las Vegas, threw six-plus innings, striking out seven to keep BYU in the game. When he left the Cougars were down 7-3, but came up with a four-run eighth inning to tie the game.
"Muir gave us a chance to win," said BYU coach Vance Law. "We had a feeling of confidence tonight on the bench. We have been through a rough stretch and I think this will jumpstart us into playing better. We need to continue to battle through our worst times."
Bryce Ayoso hit a three-run double in the eighth to tie the game off Rebel ace reliever Adam Moser.
Jared Miller and Michael Ward came in relief of Muir and performed well for BYU. Ward got a Rebel to pop up with two out and two on in the seventh. Miller picked his third victory, allowing just two hits in three innings.
BYU had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning thanks to triples by Kent Walton and Steve Parker.
That victory improves BYU's record to 13-16, while UNLV falls to 12-14 as the two teams ready for game two on Friday at 6:30 p.m. PDT.
