POSTGAME NOTES

Taysom Hill rushed for 259 yards – the most yards by a quarterback in the nation in a single game so far this season. His mark is the second most by an FBS quarterback in the past 10 years, just behind Vince Young’s 267 yards in 2005. The mark also set his career high and ranks No. 2 all-time at BYU behind Eldon Fortie, who rushed for 272 in 1962.

Jamaal Williams rushed for a career-high 182 yards. His previous career high was 155 vs. Hawai’i in 2012.

Hill’s 68-yard touchdown run in the second quarter ties the school record (which he set last year against Hawai’i) for the longest run by a quarterback.

With 550 yards on the ground, the Cougars broke the all-time school rushing record, which was previously set in 1958 against Montana (465 yards).

BYU’s 550 rushing yards are the most allowed by Texas in its program history.

The last time BYU beat a ranked opponent at home was Nov. 28, 2009, against No. 21 Utah. The Cougars last win over a top-15 team was over No. 3 Oklahoma to start the 2009 season. BYU's last win over a ranked team overall was also in 2009 when BYU downed No. 18 Oregon State to win the Las Vegas Bowl.

Cody Hoffman moved to No. 3 in BYU history for career receptions with his two receptions vs. Texas. The senior receiver now has 205 catches in his career. He trails just Margin Hooks (215) and Dennis Pitta (221).

Justin Sorensen’s four field goals are the most in one game since Owen Pachman kicked four against Utah in 2000.

The last time BYU had two players rush for 100 yards or more was vs. Hawai’i in 2012, when Hill rushed for 143 yards and Williams rushed for 155 yards.

Senior defensive back Skye PoVey had a career-high nine tackles, including eight solo.

Danny Frazier was the alumni flag bearer. Craig Bills carried the team flag, and Jherremya Leuta-Douyere carried the special teams flag.

The game was delayed due to weather for almost two hours (1:53). The delay marks the second time in two weeks BYU's game was delayed by weather.

BYU POSTGAME QUOTES

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall

“We played hard, physical and tough. We executed well and we controlled the game on the ground. We put relentless pressure on their quarterback and kicked the ball well. It was really gratifying to see a team effort the way it was and we had great leadership from Taysom Hill. We threw and caught the ball better today and our third downs reflected that.”

“Our offensive plan was exceptional and I thought that our week of practice leading up to this game was one of the best I’ve seen since I’ve been the coach here.”

“It was a hard week and it was a hard loss a week ago, but the team translated that into work and we worked them hard this week. They wanted to be worked hard and that gave them a chance to play like this.”

“We prepared better, we prepared harder, we prepared longer and we prepared more diligently as coaches and players this week.”

“We know [the offense] is going to take time. Fans and others don’t want to acknowledge it’s going to take time, but to have that kind of jump against that kind of opponent from one week to the next, I was happy for [coach Anae].”

“I’ve been meeting with the entire team more on what it means to be a BYU football player and what that looks like. Anytime we’ve been able to identify, as a coaching staff, what it is our team needs, we ask them and they respond.”

Kyle Van Noy

“I think tonight showed who we really are, our identity, and that is the heart that we have. My apologies for not getting the guys ready last week, but tonight was unbelievable and I’m grateful to be apart of not only BYU, but also the defense. I’m at a loss of words just because how fun it was out there.”

“We’re actually playing offense and defense. I think it showed tonight that we were able to get after the quarterback a lot. It was fun tonight.”

Taysom Hill

“We expected to run on them, we didn't expect to break the school record. It was working and we were able to move the ball really efficiently on the ground. There was no need to go away from it and we didn't and this was the result of that.”

“The long runs that I had were on a read-pull option and the end crashed and the backer that had me was picked up by our other running back and that freed me up. I was able to break a couple of leg tackles and have some good runs. All it comes down to is we were taking what the defense was giving us and when we have the options off our run game that we have, it's tough to stop and you saw that tonight.”

“A couple of times I was [to be as open as I was]. You know going into the game, I remember on the bus ride over here I envisioned it. I was thinking about the game and what we were going to do offensively and we did it tonight.”

Jamaal Williams

“When I saw Taysom Hill come out and run like that on the first drive and the way we were moving the ball, I had no doubt that we could get the record.”

On withstanding the punishment of rushing 30 or more times in consecutive weeks:

“I'm a warrior and I'll be fine. Whatever the team needs me to do, I'll do it. If that mean going over 30 carries in a game to help the team win then I'm happy to do that. I'm just grateful that they put that on me to carry the ball like that and to get first downs when needed. I'm just grateful to be on this team and the way this offense is going, I can't wait for what the future has for us.”

TEXAS POSTGAME QUOTES

Head coach Mack Brown

"We’re very disappointed in the loss. We knew we had to stop the running game coming in; we talked about it all week. We missed assignments, we missed tackles, and they ran the ball up and down the field."

"We had to make third down and fourth down, and they stopped us on third and short and fourth and short throughout the night."

"When you make a mistake and you’re being aggressive, you’ve got to step up and be able to stop them after that. Good teams respond and we didn’t respond tonight."

"Guys are disappointed; coaches are disappointed. We’ve got to go back and regroup and do a better job against Ole Miss next week."

"Brigham Young’s got a great defense. They were third in the country in total defense last year. They’ve got four or five pro prospects. Van Noy is as good a player as there is in the country."

"Our players are smart, they get it and they understand we didn’t get out jobs done tonight as players or coaches. We couldn’t stop the run and we couldn’t make third and fourth and short. That’s basically the story of the game."

"It hurt us having Daje Johnson get injured. We had a lot of packages for him. We thought he would be a key to this ball game in space and with his speed. But again you’ve still got to play. Injuries are a part of the game."

Mike Davis

"This game is based on momentum. You got to execute on third and ones and sustain some third and longs. We just didn’t execute well.”

"I think we fought hard, the whole team. We didn’t execute well and they played good."

Jackson Jeffcoat

"We didn’t keep the quarterback contained and that was a problem of ours. We needed to keep the quarterback contained [to stop the read option]."

"[The roughing the kicker] was a big momentum change. We had am stopped and we would have had the ball with a chance to score. But running into the kicker we had to come back on defense and we had just got a stop. So it’s tough and no one likes to lose, but it happened. We are going to go back to the film, get it back together and bounce back and get ready for the next one. You can’t let a loss beat you twice."
