Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, Army linebacker Jeremy Timpf and BYU punter Scott Arellano have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for the week ending on Saturday, Nov. 1. Golson is cited on Offense, Timpf is recognized on Defense, and Arellano is honored on Special Teams. It is Golson’s eighth career honor, while Arellano is recognized for a fourth time and Timpf for a third time.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Notre Dame QB Everett Golson
A senior from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Golson became the first player in Notre Dame history to both rush and throw for three touchdowns in the same game, as the Irish picked up a 49-39 win at Navy. On the day, Golson completed 18 of 25 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns, with nine rush attempts for 33 yards and three scores. Golson's three rushing TDs tie the Notre Dame record for a quarterback, first set by Paul Hornung in 1956 and matched by Jarious Jackson in 1998 and Golson in a game against Rice earlier this season. He has thrown at least three TD passes in five games this season, and is responsible for 156 points on the year—a sum that already ranks sixth in Notre Dame single-season history. His points-responsible-for average of 19.5 per game to date eclipses Brady Quinn's school record of 18.0 set in 2006. Golson has passed for 300+ yards four times in the last five games, something he had previously only done twice in his career. Golson has thrown for at least two TD passes in every game this year and 11 times in his Irish career.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Army LB Jeremy Timpf
A sophomore from Tucson, Arizona, Timpf recorded career highs with 17 tackles and 12 solo stops in Army’s 23-6 home loss to Air Force. Included in his stat tally were three tackles for loss and a sack. Timpf’s 17 takedowns were the most for an Army player in a single game since Steve Erzinger had 21 on Sept. 3, 2011.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BYU P Scott Arellano
A senior from Santa Ynez, California, Arellano had a record-setting day while helping BYU control field position in the Cougars’ 27-7 win at Middle Tennessee. Arellano punted seven times for a 46.3-yard average, with a career-high five punts downed inside the Blue Raiders’ 20-yard line. His marquee effort came early in the fourth quarter, when with BYU at its own 6-yard line, Arellano unloaded an 81-yard boot, the longest recorded punt in the FBS this season, which also broke the previous BYU record punt distance of 80 yards, set by Lee Johnson in 1983.
