SALT LAKE CITY – BYU’s Tanner Mangum and Mitch Mathews received the 2016 Governor’s State of Sport Event/Highlight of the Year Award Tuesday night at Vivint Smart Home Arena.

The two players were honored for Mangum's Hail Mary touchdown pass to Mathews at Nebraska in September 2015 – a pass that won the game for BYU and ended the Cornhuskers' 29-game win streak in home openers.

With one second remaining on the game clock and facing a one-point deficit on fourth down, BYU entered the field for one last play. The freshman quarterback Mangum took the snap and launched a 42-yard pass to the end zone. Mathews came down with the catch and scored the touchdown, winning the game 33-28.

The 2016 Governor’s State of Sport Awards celebrated Utah’s sports industry and honored excellence in high school, amateur, collegiate, Olympic and professional sports for the 2015 calendar year.

Sports media and industry leaders throughout Utah selected the categories and nominees. Winners were selected through an online fan vote.
