PROVO, Utah — The Collegiate Sports Video Association has named BYU’s Errol Seaver the 2017 Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year.
Seaver, who serves as the Director of Football Video and Technology at BYU, was one of 16 national finalists under consideration for the prestigious award, which was announced at the annual CSVA banquet on May 18 in Atlanta. Selected by a majority vote of CVSA members, the Bob Matey Award is presented to the Video Coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary Video Coordinator from Texas A&M.
With Seaver’s recognition, BYU is the only school in the country to have two Bob Matey Award winners. In addition to Seaver, Chad Bunn received the honor in 2002.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized by my peers in this way,” Seaver said. “This is truly a group effort by our video staff and I consider myself fortunate to work alongside outstanding individuals. I am honored to receive the award on behalf of my staff and BYU.”
Seaver is in his fourth year with the Cougars and 14th overall in college football. He came to BYU from the University of South Alabama where he worked for three seasons as the Director of Football Video, overseeing all video responsibilities for the Jaguars’ young football program. Tasked with building a video department from scratch, he built USA’s video department into one of the top in the Sun Belt Conference. Prior to that, he spent time at the Big 12 Conference office, Jacksonville State University and Lenoir-Rhyne College.
At BYU, Seaver oversees all technology needs for the football program. During his time in Provo, he has streamlined the filming and editing process for the football program, building a well-respected department that is known nationwide for their efficiency. Utilizing the latest technology, he and his staff of nine students are able to provide coaches and players film within minutes following the completion of games and practices. Seaver has also worked alongside mobile device leader Apple to collaborate and share ways in which to improve and increase the use of mobile devices within college athletics.
Seaver has served as Secretary of the CSVA since 2015 and was reelected this year to serve another two-year term as a member of the CSVA Executive Board. He was named Independent Video Coordinator of the Year for the 2016-2017 season and previously earned Sun Belt Video Coordinator of Year honors in 2013-2014 while at South Alabama. He is the first Independent member to win the Bob Matey Award in the 20-year history of the award.
During his career he has been a part of three bowl games at BYU and one conference championship in 2009 while at JSU. While mentoring many students, he has had six go on to become video coordinators at the Division I FBS level. He is a product of Jacksonville State, known by video coordinators throughout the country as the “cradle of video coordinators” for having turned out seven Division I FBS video coordinators.
A native of Hickory, North Carolina, Seaver graduated from Appalachian State University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in electronic media/broadcasting and earned a master’s degree in athletic administration from Jacksonville State in 2010. He and his wife, Lindsey, reside in Springville, Utah.
