ESPN, BYUtv announce television plans and kick times for four BYU football games
PROVO, Utah — BYU television partners ESPN and BYUtv today announced broadcast plans and kickoff times for four games on the 2019 Cougar football schedule, including matchups versus Utah, Tennessee, USC and Idaho State.
BYU will open the 2019 season with back-to-back games on ESPN against Utah and Tennessee. The Cougars and Utes open the season in a featured Thursday night ESPN matchup, kicking at 8:15 p.m. MT on Aug. 29 in LaVell Edwards Stadium. The next week BYU travels to SEC country to face the Tennessee Volunteers in a 7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT start on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Knoxville.
The Cougars will welcome the USC Trojans to Provo on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14, in a 1:30 p.m. MT kickoff that will be nationally televised on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. The specific network designation will be determined following games on Sept. 7.
BYU will also host Idaho State in a Saturday afternoon contest at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Nov. 16. The Cougars and Bengals will kick at 1 p.m. on BYUtv and ESPN3.
In addition, ESPN announced that BYU’s remaining home games against Washington (Sept. 21), Boise State (Oct. 19) and Liberty (Nov. 9) will be broadcast nationally on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU. Game times and the specific networks will be announced at a later date, subject to ESPN’s twelve-day/six-day selection process.
As previously released, BYU’s game at Utah State on Nov. 2 will also be televised on one of the ESPN networks, with start time and specific network to be determined later. Also previously announced, the CBS Sports Network will televise the Cougars’ regular-season finale at San Diego State on Nov. 30, with kick set for 6 p.m. PT. To date, the initial television plans for nine of BYU’s 12 regular-season games have been released, including seven on ESPN Networks.
BYU’s 2019 football schedule features one of the best home schedules in school history, road trips to both coasts and three matchups with top-25 teams. Washington (No. 13 AP, No. 13 Coaches), Utah State (No. 21 AP, No. 22 Coaches) and Boise State (No. 23 AP, No. 24 Coaches) finished 2018 in the final top-25 polls, while seven opponents earned a bowl invitation and nine won six or more games last season. BYU opponents earned a collective 88-65 (.575) record this past season.
The Cougars are the only FBS team in 2019 to start the season with four games against teams from a Power 5 conference. In all, the 12-game slate features teams from nine different states and six conferences—SEC, Pac-12, American, Mountain West, Mid-American and Big Sky—as well as fellow independents UMass and Liberty. BYU opponents in 2019 represent the states of California, Florida, Idaho, Massachusetts, Ohio, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Washington.
