Hall named to watch list for prestigious Maxwell Award

SOUTHAMPTON, Pennsylvania — BYU junior quarterback Jaren Hall was named to the watch list for the prestigious Maxwell Award, presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club to the outstanding player in college football.

The award, now in its 86th year, is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a football standout at the Swarthmore College and later a renowned sportswriter and football official. 

As a sophomore in 2021, Hall was named Pro Football Network All-Independent Quarterback of the Year and was on the midseason watch list for the Davey O’Brien Award. In addition, he was named to the Phil Steele All-Independent First Team, the Pro Football Network All-Independent First Team and was recognized by College Sports Madness as Independent Offensive Player of the Week twice during the 2021 season. 

Despite missing three games due to injury in 2021, Hall completed 189 of 296 passes for 2,583 yards and 20 touchdowns, while compiling an efficiency rating of 156.1. He also had 62 carries for 307 yards (4.9 per carry) and three rushing touchdowns, while leading No. 19 ranked BYU to eight wins in 10 starts during the 2021 season. 

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on Nov. 1, with the three finalists being unveiled on Nov. 22. The winner will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 8. 

The Maxwell Football Club was founded in 1935 and is the oldest football organization of its kind in America. The Club recognizes excellence in performance at the high school, collegiate and professional levels of the game.
