PROVO, Utah - The 2012 BYU football team continued its preperations for the Aug. 30 season opener with its 12th day of fall camp on Wednesday. With only 15 days until the first game the Cougars continue to build momentum with good competition for the season.
"The luxury we have right now is competition at a lot of different places," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "That has helped out consistency in practice. If a player has an off day or doesn't want to work on a particular play someone goes by him."
Highlights from the team session include the first play from the line of scrimmage. Quarterback Riley Nelson went deep to an open Alex Kuresa for a 60-yard touchdown. Kuresa, usually a quarterback, has been playing wide receiver, returning punts and working with special teams so far in camp. Nelson finished the session going 3 of 4 for 70 yards and also had one carry for a three-yard gain.
Freshman quarterback Taysom Hill showed his athleticism rolling out of the pocket and throwing on the run to a wide open receiver in Kurt Henderson for a 20-yard pickup. Hill later connected with wide receiver Brett Thompson for a 35-yard score.
Senior defensive back Mike Hague recorded an interception in the team portion and defensive back DeQuan Everett nearly had another but couldn't hang on to the ball.
The Cougars plan to hold a closed scrimmage on Thursday.
