PROVO, Utah – Tyler Haws and Brandon Davies received all-district recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Tuesday to add to their list of honors garnered this season.
Haws was voted to the District 9 First Team while Davies earned second-team honors. Both Haws and Davies were also named first-team all-district by the United States Basketball Writers Association and voted to the All-West Coast Conference team by the league’s coaches.
The 2012-13 WCC scoring champion, Haws is 10th in the nation in points per game at 21.5. The Alpine, Utah, native has scored 730 points this season – sixth all-time at BYU and a record for a sophomore. Along the way Haws has scored 20-plus points 23 times, also a record for a Cougar sophomore and fifth all-time in program history.
Earlier this season Haws joined Danny Ainge as the only BYU players to reach 1,000 career points during their sophomore seasons. Haws is currently sitting at 1,127 career points, three behind Ainge for the most points by a Cougar through their sophomore year.
Davies has stuffed the stat sheet this season, averaging 18.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.4 steals while shooting .530 from the field. The senior from Provo, Utah, has collected 10 double-doubles and has scored 20-plus points 15 times. His versatility was on full display against San Diego in the WCC Tournament when he recorded a near triple-double with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
A three-year starter, Davies will conclude his career as one of the most versatile players in program history as he is one of only two Cougars along with Russell Larson to be ranked in the top 10 in career scoring (10th), rebounding (7th), blocks (5th) and steals (T-8th). He is also 25th all-time in assists, 11th in double-doubles, third in offensive rebounds and tied with Jackson Emery for fourth-most wins played in.
Haws and Davies have led the Cougars to the quarterfinals of the National Invitational Tournament with wins over Washington and Mercer. No. 3 seed BYU will play at No. 1 seed Southern Miss on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CDT on ESPNU. The winner will advance to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden in New York.
