PROVO, Utah- Four Cougars scored in double-figures and led the BYU men’s basketball team to a 100-52 victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Wednesday.
"I thought our players came out with a real focus tonight and the way we played defensively, that was a real improvement from the other night," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "The most encouraging things is that it has come from the guys. These guys know what we need to do as a team to become a better team and I thought we really improved tonight."
Kyle Collinsworth scored a career-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Tyler Haws finished with 19 points, all coming in the first half, and five rebounds, while Eric Mika added 15 points and six rebounds of his own. Anson Winder came off the bench to go perfect from the field with 11 points, 3 of 3 from beyond the arc.
Nate Austin went for eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals with Matt Carlino finishing with seven points, seven assists and four steals. Frank Bartley IV added five points, four rebounds and six assists off the bench.
BYU (8-3) kept PVAMU (2-7) to a 29.2 shooting percentage, while shooting 61.4 from the field and 71.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Cougars outrebounded the Panthers 44-31, dominated in the paint, 44 points to 12, and assisted on 27 of their 35 made field goals.
Haws got the Cougars off to a hot start, scoring 13 of BYU’s first 15 points to lead 15-6. A chase-down block by Collinsworth led to Haws’ first jumper for the first points. BYU went on a 13-2 run to extend the lead 20-8 that included two 3-pointers from Haws and a layup from Mika at the 14:49 mark. With 11:21 remaining in the half, Bartley recorded a block that led to a BYU basket at the other end for the 13-point lead.
Halfway into the first half, Bartley assisted Austin for an easy layup, which was followed by Mika’s 3-point play to go up 35-17. With 7:13 left in the half, Collinsworth blocked his second shot of the game with Bartley drawing a charge one minute later. At the 3:40 mark, Collinsworth completed a 3-point play that came off an off-balanced jumper for the 38-20 lead. Bartley went behind the back for a Collinsworth two-hand dunk, followed by another assist to Austin down the lane for the 20-point lead. With 1:15 remaining, Carlino threw an alley-oop pass to Collinsworth for the dunk and BYU ended the half up 46-28.
Haws ended the half with 19 points and five rebounds, while Collinsworth added 11 points and three rebounds. Austin contributed six points, six rebounds and four assists and Carlino added five assists at the half.
Austin scored with his back to the basket to start the second half. With 18:39 on the clock, Bartley went down the lane for a floater to keep BYU up 50-31, which was followed by a Carlino steal for an easy layup. The Cougars went on a 20-0 run that included Carlino and Collinsworth connecting on consecutive possessions for a layup in traffic and a one-handed dunk by Collinsworth in transition to extend BYU’s lead 64-37 with 11:38 remaining.
The Cougars' 20-0 run also included a Winder steal for the layup on the break along with a 3-pointer for the 76-37 lead. Josh Sharp made a two-handed dunk for a 40-point lead, which was followed by two 3-pointers from Winder to stay up 90-46 with 3:03 remaining. Andrew Johnston’s 3-pointer gave BYU 100 points with 1:22 left to end the game 100-52.
"Tonight, I thought our guys responded well to the game plan that Prairie View had and got a lot of guys involved early and we had a lot of guys play well late," Rose said. "I thought for a game like this, our guys really stayed together and we competed together well."
BYU will travel to the Huntsman Center to play in-state rival Utah on Saturday at 8 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Network and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
