SALT LAKE CITY – Junior Kyle Collinsworth recorded his first career triple-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead BYU men’s basketball over Hawai’i 90-70 Saturday at the EnergySolutions Arena.

"With this group, I think consistently we have a really good group of scorers," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "And I think we have some really good scorers on the bench who we haven’t been able to find a lot of time for, so I hope we can keep their confidence up because we are going to need all those guys."

Collinsworth added two blocks and a steal to go along with his triple-double. He is the first BYU player to record a triple-double since 1988 when Michael Smith recorded 20 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

“It’s awesome," Rose said. "He’s a great player. He does that almost every game and almost gets a triple double. I think in his leadership, what he brings to us every day in that aspect, is even bigger. No surprise to us.”

Tyler Haws finished with a game-high 30 points, going a perfect 10 of 10 from the charity strip, and seven rebounds on the night. Chase Fischer added 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals with Anson Winder contributing 11 points, five rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block.

The Cougars outrebounded the Warriors 48-30 while shooting 48.3 percent from the field and holding Hawai’i to 39.4 percent shooting.

Hawai’i took a quick 7-0 lead to start the game, but was answered with four aggressive buckets by the Cougars on the other end for an 8-7 BYU lead. The 8-0 run included consecutive layups by Haws, a dunk by Collinsworth and a Collinsworth outlet pass to Winder for the layup at the 15:56 mark.

BYU fell back into a 24-16 deficit following a 13-0 run by the Warriors with under eight minutes left in the first half despite shots from deep by Fischer and Haws. The Cougars responded with a 13-0 run that was ignited by Collinsworth with his behind-the-back pass to Haws for the layup, a shot from deep and his putback layup. The lead was regained 30-26 by BYU following Collinsworth’s layup during the run with 2:56 left in the half.

The Cougars finished the half on a 7-0 run starting with Fischer’s 3-pointer and ending with Haws’ baseline jumper with two seconds left after Hawai’i tied it at back at 30 apiece. BYU entered halftime up 37-30 led by Haws’ 15 points and Collinsworth’s 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Haws scored the first BYU points of the second half with a 3-pointer to maintain a 40-32 lead. With 15:34 left in the game, Winder’s block led to his assist to Fischer on the break for a three-point play and a 12-point lead. Collinsworth’s big block at the 12:57 mark maintained a 54-42 lead. Fischer’s 3-pointer ended the Warriors’ 10-0 run to keep a seven-point lead with 10:41 remaining.

Winder connected on his first 3-pointer of the game at the 5:50 mark, which was followed up by a Collinsworth two-hand dunk on the break with the assist from Winder to push BYU’s lead up 73-58. With 2:38 left, Collinsworth recorded his triple-double with his 10th assist on an inbound pass to Haws for a jumper and a 20-point lead, 82-62.

BYU welcomes No. 25 Utah to the Marriott Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Netswork on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
