Scouting Utah

Utah (17-9, 8-3) returns four lettermen and one starter from last year's 23-9 team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after tying for the Mountain West regular season title with UNLV. The Utes enter Saturday's game with one of the nation's longest current winning streaks, having won six straight games since losing to BYU (69-61) in Provo on Jan. 29. The Utes winning streak is tied for the ninth nationally. Utah has a perfect 6-0 home conference record and is 12-2 overall this year in the Huntsman Center. The two home losses were to instate schools Weber State (79-77) and Southern Utah (77-70) in December. The Utes are 5-7 away from home this year, including a 2-3 conference road record. Utah's conference losses came consecutively at Wyoming (78-77 in OT) and at Colorado State (73-65) followed by the loss in Provo to the Cougars. The Utes and Cougars have played four common non-conference opponents. Both BYU and Utah lost to USC on a neutral court, and the Utes dropped games to instate rival Utah State (58-57 in Logan) along with its two home losses to Weber State and Southern Utah. BYU won its three preseason instate games. The Utes are coached by assistant coach Dick Hunsaker with head coach Rick Majerus missing the season due to his and his mother's health concerns. Junior transfer guard Kevin Bradley averages 11.0 points to lead the Utes. Bradley, who had five points in seven minutes vs. BYU in the first meeting, comes off the bench. Junior forward Phil Cullen adds 9.6 points followed by brothers Jeff (junior forward) and Britton Johnsen (sophomore forward) at 8.7 and 8.6 points, respectively. Senior center Nate Althoff adds 8.4 points but has been coming off the bench recently with the return of junior center Chris Burgess from a fractured ankle injury. Burgess has been playing well since his return and averages 7.5 points and a team-leading 5.6 rebounds per game in 22 contests, including 16 starts. Britton Johnson adds 5.3 rebounds per game while starting guard Nick Jacobson contributes 7.6 points and fellow starter Travis Spivey adds 5.4 points and a team-best 3.5 assists per game. Utah shoots 47.5 percent, including 38.1 percent on treys, while holding opponents to 40.2 percent from the field and 36.3 percent on threes. Utah makes 70.1 percent of its free throw attempts. The Utes out score opponents 73.2-62.4 and win the boards battle by an average of 37.3-30.4.

Cougars Defeat Rival Utes on ESPN

PROVO -- In a highly anticipated matchup against his former team, senior guard Trent Whiting scored 21 points to lead BYU to a 69-61 victory over arch rival Utah in front of 19,000 fans and a national television audience. The win, which moved the Cougars back into the lead of the all-time series with the Utes, marked the first Utah defeat at the Marriott Center in six years. BYU now leads the series with Utah 115-114, dating back to 1909. More importantly, however, the Cougars improved their overall record to 14-6 on the season, and their 3-2 conference mark moves them into a tie for second place. The Utes got on the board first, opening the game with a short jumper by Nate Althoff and a three-pointer by Nick Jacobson to take a 5-0 lead. But just over five minutes in, a jumper from Mekeli Wesley gave BYU an 8-7 advantage, and the Cougars would only relinquish the lead once the rest of the game. Two free throws from Mike Puzey near the close of the first half brought Utah to within two at the break. But BYU opened the lead up in the second half with solid defense and sharp shooting from three point range. "The difference in the ball game was the second half," said BYU coach Steve Cleveland. "We played with much more aggression, especially at the defensive end." While the Cougars picked up their defensive intensity and rebounding in the second period, the offense started heating up as well. BYU went on a 9-0 run midway through the half, which included back-to-back three pointers and a 15-foot jumper from Wesley, to extend the lead to 49-34 with 11:20 to play. With a traditional three-point play, Whiting capped off an 8-0 run minutes later to give BYU its largest lead of the game at 60-21. The Utes fought back, pulling to within eight with under a minute to play. But the Cougars sealed the victory at the free throw line, hitting 7-of-8 down the stretch. BYU shot 46 percent from the field and 52 percent from three-point range for the game, including 5-of-8 on threes in the second half. The Cougars held Utah to just 39 percent from the floor, marking the sixth straight game BYU has held an opponent under 40 percent shooting in the Marriott Center. Wesley finished the night with 16 points, including a career-high four three-pointers. Whiting shot 5-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Terrell Lyday also scored in double figures, finishing with 14 points for the Cougars. Nick Jacobson led the Utes with 11 points, and Jeff Johnson, the only other Ute in double figures, added 10 points.

Notables from the First Meeting

• BYU defeated Utah in consecutive meetings for the first time since the 1993-94 season when the Cougars won four straight, including the first meeting of the 1994-95 season.

• BYU moved to 4-0 for the season versus in-state opponents to claim the Oquirrh Bucket which honors the team with the best record against instate opponents each year. The Cougars have now defeated every team in the state at least once for second consecutive year. BYU ended Utah's string of six straight Oquirrh Bucket triumphs. BYU has won the instate competition eight times since the first Oquirrh Bucket in the 1974-75 season.

• Steve Cleveland is now 10-9 versus in-state opponents, moving above .500 for the first time in his career at BYU. The victory improved his record against Utah to 2-7 - the only team to which Coach Cleveland has an in-state losing record.

• Trent Whiting led the Cougars with 21 on 8-14 shooting from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line while dishing out a career-best 8 assists. Mekeli Wesley added 16 points and Terrell Lyday contributed 14 in the effort. Wesley made a career-high 4 three pointers, going 4-6 from behind the arc.

• Matt Montague went 1-2 from behind the three point line, it was the first time in 14 games that Montague had made a three pointer. Montague went 6-7 on three pointers in the first 5 games and then fell to 0-7 in the next 14 games. He has not attemped a three since the Utah game.

Briefly on BYU's Last Week

The Cougars moved into a half-game lead in conference play with three wins last week before Utah pulled even with its win Monday over CSU. BYU shot 45.9 percent from the floor, 38.2 percent on threes and 81.3 percent from the line in the three victories. The Cougars held their opponents to 43.8 percent from the floor, 27.8 percent from behind the arc and an average of 60 points per game. BYU scored 72 points per game.

Solid Defense

The Cougars held high-scoring Wyoming to a season-low 63 points. BYU held Colorado State, the third-best three-point shooting team in the nation (.427), to 1-8 shooting (.125) from behind the arc. The Cougars held the MWC's top scorer, Wyoming's Marcus Bailey, to nine points (came in averaging 17.8 ppg). BYU then stopped Colorado State's top scorer, John Sivesind, keeping the Ram sharpshooter from making a field goal while scoring two points from the line. Sivesind, who entered the game fourth in the nation in three-point shooting (.486), was 0-6 from the floor, including 0-4 on three-point attempts.

BYU Fans Witnessed Strong Senior Farewells

Mekeli Wesley headlined a group of five seniors who played their last regular season game in the Marriott Center Saturday. A four-year starter, Wesley scored a game-high 25 points in his final home appearance. Trent Whiting added 18 points, three assists and three steals; Terrell Lyday had 10 points and a game-high five assists and two steals; Nathan Cooper added a bucket with four rebounds and four assists; while Nate Knight played only two minutes.

Cougars Improving In Conference

With its three wins last week, BYU surpassed the number of conference wins it achieved last season when the Cougars finished sixth at 7-7. This year's squad is currently 8-3 and in a first place tie with Utah. BYU has improved under Steve Cleveland in each of his four seasons. BYU had a 4-10 conference record his first season in 1997-98 and improved to 6-8 and 7-7 the past two seasons. BYU is assured of a winning conference record for the first time since 1995. BYU has not placed better than fifth in the conference standings since taking second (13-5) as a member of the WAC in 1995. The Cougars had not won more than seven conference games since going 9-9 (fifth WAC) in 1996.

Lyday Outburst Kills Rams

Terrell Lyday did not score during the first 30 minutes vs. CSU Saturday, but then reeled off 10 points in 5 minutes to keep a streak of 12 straight games in double digits going. Lyday also led the teams in assists, by handing out a game-high 5 of the team's 17 assists. He ignited a spurt (in 1:17 seconds) that took BYU from a four-point lead to a more comfortable 12-point margin by knocking down a three, making a driving layup on the next possession and then stealing the ball and hitting Wesley for a trey to force a Ram timeout.

Cooper Has Season Highs

Nathan Cooper equaled a season high with four assists Saturday vs. CSU. He scored a season-high 11 points Thursday vs. Wyoming. The double figure output was the fourth for Cooper this season, but the first time he has recorded double digits in 11 games.

Lyday Equals Bests

Terrell Lyday equaled his career high of 5 assists Saturday vs. CSU. He matched a season-high 25 points Thursday against Wyoming. Going 8-18 from the floor, he also set a season-high in field goal attempts, only one off his career-high of 19 attempts vs. Southern Illinois in last year's NIT tournament.

Bobik, Chrisman Set New Marks

Freshman guard Daniel Bobik had a career-high six rebounds Saturday vs. CSU in 20 minutes. Freshman forward Jacob Chrisman added a career-best 3 assists vs. the Rams.

Trey Lyday

Lyday went 16-33 (.485) on treys at home in BYU's seven MWC wins and is 2-11 (.182) in BYU's three MWC road losses. Last week he went 2-5 vs. CSU and 2-6 vs. Wyoming at home and was 1-5 at SDSU. He went 0-5 at CSU in the first meeting this year. Lyday's 0-5 night on threes at CSU was only the second game this year in which he has not made a trey but he didn't make his three at Wyoming until the final buzzer. Overall, he is shooting 37 percent on threes, making a team-leading 47 triples. He has made a trey in 24 of 26 games this season. After making two treys Saturday vs. CSU, he has made multiple threes in 13 games this year, including the last two straight. Last year he made two or more treys in 20 of 33 games.

Record-Setting Charitable Contributions

BYU has excelled at the charity stripe this year, ranked fourth nationally in free throw shooting (.773). BYU set a new school record Monday at SDSU when Mekeli Wesley made the final two free throws of the game, completing a string of 19 consecutive made free throws for BYU. The Cougars finished 19-20 after missing the first attempt of the game. Wesley made BYU's first two free throws vs. Wyoming before a Cougar miss. Going 12-18 in the first half, BYU made 16 consecutive attempts vs. Wyoming Thursday between a Jacob Chrisman miss in the first half and a Mekeli Wesley miss with 3:03 left in the game. BYU made 21-22 free throws in the second half. BYU was only 9-15 from the line against CSU to go 61-75 (.813) for the week.

Home Support Growing

Fan support at home games has improved each year under Steve Cleveland as average attendance has grown from 8,430 in his first year to 9,809 in his second, 10,794 last year and 11,452 this year in 15 home dates. BYU has averaged 15,608 in its seven conference home contests this year, compared to 13,464 last year and 11,562 the previous season. The top crowd of this season was 19,098 in BYU's win over rival Utah on ESPN.

Elite BYU Company

BYU finished the year with a perfect 15-0 home record this year with its two wins this past week. The Steve Cleveland-coached team became the fifth BYU squad to ever complete a perfect home record. The Roger Reid 1989-90 team also went a perfect 15-0 at home. Other unbeaten teams include the Stan Watts coached 1971-72 team (12-0), Frank Arnold's 1978-79 (14-0) and 1980-81 (13-0) teams and Reid's 1994-95 (14-0) squad. With its 15th home win this year, BYU improved over last season 14-2 home record (including two NIT victories) to become only the third Cougar team to win more than 14 home games in a season. In addition to the 15-0 1989-90 team, the 1987-88 Ladell Andersen squad won a BYU record 16 games with two losses in the Marriott Center.

BYU Avenges Last Year's Two Home Losses

BYU ended two home losing streaks with its wins over Utah and New Mexico. Both the Utes and Lobos had five-game winning streaks in Provo dating back to 1995 before falling in the Marriott Center last week. Including last year's MWC Tournament wins, BYU has now defeated Utah in consecutive meetings for the first time since the 1993-94 season and New Mexico twice in a row for the first time since the 1994-95 season.

Cooper Responds to Increased Role

Cooper has played well since getting more playing time since Travis Hansen's foot injury has kept him out of the lineup. Averaging 4.6 points and 3.6 rebounds coming into the last Utah game, Cooper has started six of the last seven games while averaging 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He had a season-high 11 points vs. Wyoming and had a game-high and season-best eight rebounds vs. New Mexico after pulling down six boards against both Utah and Air Force. He has played solid defense during the stretch, whether matched up with a taller post player or facing a quicker perimeter opponent.

BYU Ranks Fourth Nationally in Free Throw Shooting

BYU is fourth nationally in free throw percentage in the latest NCAA statistics released Tuesday. The Cougars shoot 77.3 percent. Ten players are shooting 70 percent or better, with four shooting better than 80 percent (Wesley, Lyday, Whiting, Howard). Senior Trent Whiting makes a team-best 82.8 percent (except Dan Howard, 2-2, 1.000). Freshman Jake Chrisman has the team's worst percentage (except Jordan Archibald, 1-2, .500) at 64.7 percent (22-34).

Scoring Points

Nine BYU players have had double figures scoring games this season. The regular starters (Wesley, Lyday, Whiting, Nielsen, Hansen, Cooper) are the only players to reach double figures in conference games. Wesley scored the individual season high thus far with his 29 points at Wyoming. Wesley, Terrell Lyday and Trent Whiting are the only three players to earn team-high game scoring honors this year. BYU shoots 45.8 percent, including 36.7 percent on threes, and 77.3 percent from the line while averaging 71.2 points. The Cougars are out scoring their opponents by nearly 10 points (9.7). BYU has topped 50 percent six times this year, all wins, including home conference wins over San Diego State, UNLV and Air Force. Five of the six games over 50 percent were in the Marriott Center. The one road game BYU shot over 50 percent was vs. Boise State (53.3 percent) during the Yahoo! Sports Invitational in Hawaii. BYU shot 49 percent vs. CSU Saturday and went 9-22 on threes. Three players are averaging double figures (Mekeli Wesley, 16.3; Terrell Lyday, 15.7; Trent Whiting, 14.8).

Defense

BYU holds opponents to 61.6 points (15th nationally) and a 40.0 field goal percentage (T-25th nationally), including 29.4 percent on threes. BYU has held nine of its last 10 opponents at home to under 40 percent shooting (Wyoming .423). BYU has held 14 of 26 opponents overall under 40 percent shooting. BYU had not allowed an opponent to shoot 40 percent on threes in 13 straight games until San Diego State shot 45.5 percent. Wyoming shot 23.5 percent Thursday and CSU shot 12.5 percent Saturday. BYU has held opponents under 40 percent on threes in 22 of 26 games overall. BYU held the MWC's top shooting team, CSU, to 37.5 percent Saturday and 41.7 percent in Moby Arena. BYU held high-scoring Wyoming to a season-low 63 points. BYU has also had success shutting down the opponent's top player. The Cougars held the MWC's top scorer, Wyoming's Marcus Bailey, to nine points (came in averaging 17.8 ppg) last week and then stopped Colorado State's top scorer, John Sivesind, keeping the Ram sharpshooter from making a field goal while scoring two points from the line. Sivesind, who entered the game fourth in the nation in three-point shooting (.486), was 0-6 from the floor, including 0-4 on three-point attempts. BYU held New Mexico's Eric Chatfield and Ruben Douglas to nine points apiece and held Bailey to nine points in Laramie. BYU held UNLV center Kaspars Kambala, averaging 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds entering the game, to two points and three rebounds in Provo. Against SDSU, Aztec star forward Randy Holcomb was the only player to reach double figures in Provo, but BYU held the two-time MWC Player of the Week winner to 13 points, almost five points below his team-leading season scoring average.

70-Point Mark

BYU held all three opponents below 70 points last week for an average of 60 points. BYU is 18-2 this year when holding opponents to less than 70 points. BYU is 1-5 when opponents have scored 70 or more points. UNLV (68) joined Colorado State (60) as the only opponents to score less than 70 points and still win. Wyoming scored 85 points against BYU in Laramie, the most points given up by the Cougars this season.

On the Boards

BYU averages 33.3 rebounds while allowing 32.4. BYU was out rebounded by Utah in the first meeting, 42-26. The Utes currently rank 13th in the nation with a 6.9 rebounding margin. BYU out rebounded SDSU 26-21 and was out boarded by UNLV, 39-35 in its last two road games. BYU is 11-0 when out boarding its opponents, 6-6 when being out rebounded, and 2-1 when they are equal on the boards. BYU has totaled 40 or more boards six times this year. Mekeli Wesley pulls down a team-best 5.5 boards per game.

Whiting, Knight Made Strong BYU Debuts

Whiting scored a game-high 22 points on 7-11 shooting, including 4-7 threes, in a team-high 39 minutes in his debut while Knight made a solid contribution with five points and six rebounds in 18 minutes. Neither player had played in a game for more than a year since transferring last fall.

Training Room News

Hansen Doubtful with Foot Injury

Travis Hansen has missed the last six games with a broken right foot and after playing a limited role against Utah in the first meeting. After played with discomfort and pain at CSU and Wyoming a bone scan revealed a stress fracture. He played with the injury vs. Utah, but broke the bone in his foot during the game. He uses a bone stimulater in hopes to accelerate the healing process. He was cleared for some limited practice Tuesday but his status is still doubtful that he will be able to play Saturday at Utah.

Knight Working Through Back Troubles

Transfer senior forward Nate Knight has been limited in his ability to participate in practices fully because of a lingering back injury. He has played with the condition throughout the season and is not expected to miss any games.

Vranes out for the Year

Two-year starting guard Michael Vranes will miss the entire season after a foot injury required two fall surgeries. Vranes played both the point and wing for the Cougars and was the third leading scorer last season and the team's best defender on the perimeter. In January, Vranes underwent a third surgery in Houston from a specialist, who said Vranes has a possibility for a full recovery. The surgery was determined a success but his status for next year is still uncertain. He has one year of eligibility remaining if he is able to return.

Injuries Played Role in Three Players Decision to Redshirt the 2000-01 Season

BYU Head Basketball Coach Steve Cleveland announced Nov. 17 that three players on this year's team - Garner Meads, Jesse Pinegar and Bart Jepsen - plan to redshirt during the 2000-01 season. Meads and Pinegar are both freshmen members of last year's top-20 recruiting class while Jepsen is a sophomore who returned from an LDS Church mission this summer. All three players have experienced injuries that have factored into the decision to redshirt. Meads, a McDonald's High School All-American forward, has had multiple injuries impede his ability to practice. A knee surgery limited his basketball until late summer and a lung injury sustained in only the team's fifth practice has kept the 6-foot-8 forward from any physical activity for the past month. "After meeting with Garner and his family we have determined it is in his best interest to redshirt this season," Cleveland said. "He has not been able to condition because of his lung injury and has also missed nearly all of our practices. He plans to leave on his mission in February, which means he will not enroll in school for the Winter semester." Pinegar, who was a high school teammate of Meads' at Salt Lake City's Brighton High School, suffered a stress fracture in his left foot last week and has a sesmoid (inflamed bone) problem on his right foot. While he will be able to condition and lift weights, the 6-foot-9 forward will not be able to jump and practice for 4-6 weeks. A 6-foot-9 forward, Jepsen has planned on redshirting this year since returning from his mission this summer. While serving his two-year mission, he sustained a broken leg.

Meads Begins Serving 2-Year Mission

McDonald's High School All-American forward Garner Meads has received his mission call to serve a 2-year LDS Church mission in Edmonton, Alberta. He began serving his mission last week when he entered the Missionary Training Center in Provo. Meads decided to redshirt this season after a lung injury kept him from being able to practice until the season began. He will return to the team in the winter of 2003 to resume the final half of his redshirt year before taking the court for the 2003-04 season.
