Scouting Utah State

The Aggies are 9-4 overall and, like the Cougars, have won their last three games. The Aggies are a perfect 7-0 at home this year and are coming off a big win over Fresno State, 83-66. The Aggies have won five of their last six games with the lone loss coming at Weber State (86-73). Weber State is the only common opponent the Aggies and Cougars have played so far this year with Utah still remaining on BYU's conference schedule. The Aggies lost to the Utes in Salt Lake City (77-42). Utah State's other loss came against Florida (60-58) on a neutral floor at the Maui Classic in USU's second game of the year. Three Aggies are averaging double figures, led by senior Troy Rolle at 11.5 ppg. Sophomore Tony Brown scores 11.2 and junior Shawn Daniels adds 10.5 points and a team-best 7.6 rebounds per contest. The Aggies are shooting 46 percent from the floor, 32 percent on treys and 61 percent from the line. They are pulling down nearly five more boards than their opponents (37.5 -32.8). The Aggies score 69.6 points per game. USU coach Stew Morrill returns just three letterwinners from last years 15-13 team and has eight newcomers.

Series Notes

This will be the 216th meeting between the two rivals, dating back to 1905. BYU holds the edge in the series with a 130-85 record. The Cougars could pull even in the series in Logan with a win as the Aggies hold a 54-53 edge on their home court. The last time BYU won in Logan was in 1992 (Dec. 4) with the Cougars winning by 10, 93-83. The last game in Logan was a 72-69 Aggie win in 1997 (Nov. 29). The home team has won the last seven games in the series. Coach Cleveland is 1-1 against the Aggies in his two previous seasons. Utah State is BYU's oldest rival and the Cougars' 130 victories over the Aggies is BYU's most wins against any opponent.

Last Meeting

BYU managed a 61-59 win in Provo last Jan. 2 in the last meeting between the two schools. Neither team shot well with BYU making 38 percent of its shots and USU just 29 percent. BYU made all but one free throw (10-11) and Michael Vranes had career highs with 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cougar effort. Mekeli Wesley and Nathan Cooper added 15 points apiece for the Cougars but they didn't get a lot of scoring from others as Silester Rivers and Mark Bigelow added four points each and Bret Jepsen one basket. Todd Christensen played 17 minutes and did not score, going 0-4 from behind the arc. Wesley had five assists. Donnie Johnson led USU with 14 points and Troy Rolle added 10. Tony Brown had eight points in 25 minutes.

In-State Stats

BYU is 2-0 this year against in-state teams with a 92-64 win over Southern Utah and a 66-53 Cougar Classic victory over Weber State. Saturday's game at Utah State is the Cougars' first in-state road game of the year. BYU will play Utah twice in Mountain West Conference action with the first meeting taking place in Provo Jan. 15. The Aggies are 0-2 this year against in-state foes with road losses at Weber State (86-73) and Utah (77-42). Overall, BYU is 113-112 against Utah, 130-85 against Utah State, 16-9 against Weber State and 3-0 against Southern Utah for a combined 262-206 in-state record.

BYU Player Notables

Mekeli Wesley

Mekeli is BYU's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 18.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg. He has been BYU's top scorer in seven games this season. He scored 18 points and pulled down six boards against UC Irvine. He had six rebounds and scored a game-high 24 points, 16 in the second half, at UCSB -- the seventh time he has scored 20 or more points. He had eight points and seven rebounds at Florida International. He had a game-high 20 points at South Alabama. He averaged 21 points and nine rebounds to earn MWC Player of the Week honors (Dec. 7-11) and was named the Cougar Classic MVP for the second time in his career (also as freshman). After averaging three rebounds per game in first three contests, he averaged 7.4 over the next eight. He recorded his first double-double of the year (fourth of career) with 24 points and 10 rebounds in win over Texas Southern. He scored a season-high 26 points in back-to-back games this year versus Denver and Arizona State (he scored 31 points twice as a freshman).

Terrell Lyday

Lyday averages 15.2 points and team-high 31.8 minutes. He has scored in double figures in 10 of BYU's 12 games and has made a three-pointer in all 12 games this season on his way to a team-high 24 three pointers (24-58, .414). Last year he made more than 100 treys for Fresno City College. Wednesday, he scored a game-high 22 points, his second-best output of the year, to lead a BYU comeback win over UC Irvine. He had career-best six steals at UCSB, despite off night scoring (2-11 for eight points and held scoreless in the first half for the first time this year). He scored a career-best 26 points at FIU to match Mekeli Wesley for season-high honors. He had 15 points against South Alabama, where he was a perfect 4-4 on three-point attempts. He joined Wesley on the Cougar Classic All-Tournament team Dec. 10-11 and is showing why he was recruited by Coach Steve Cleveland out of Fresno City College to help replace production lost by the LDS Church mission departure of freshman sensation Mark Bigelow (15 ppg last year). He scored 18 points against Arizona and had 17 vs. ASU.

Michael Vranes

Vranes had one of his better games of the year Wednesday with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists against UC Irvine. He is second on the team with 3.3 assists per game from his shooting guard spot (averaged 2.9 last year as point guard). He totalled 10 points, six rebounds and a season-high seven assists vs. South Carolina State. He had a season-high 15 points along with five rebounds vs. Weber State.

Matt Montague

The only true point guard on the BYU roster, he has team-leading 53 assists (4.4 apg). He is averaging 2.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. He has been plagued by a achilles injury all year and was limited to only 10 minutes against UC Irvine Wednesday and did not record an assist for the first time this year. Montague did not take a shot but made three clutch free throws down the stretch at UCSB. He had two points, four rebounds and eight assists in team- and personal career-high 41 minutes at FIU. He shared team-high five rebounds with Wesley at South Alabama while handing out four assists. He matched his season high with five points vs. South Carolina State and made his second three-pointer of the year (2-6 on the season). After receiving stitches to repair a cut above his eye against ASU, Montague returned and led BYU on a 14-1 run. He dished out a season-high nine assists vs. Weber State and helped hold Wildcat guard Eddie Gill to 2-14 shooting.

Eric Nielsen

A returned LDS missionary to Russia, the sophomore is averaging 4.8 points and 4.0 rebounds. Nielsen returned to the starting lineup against UC Irvine after a two stint off the bench. He averaged 5.4 points (52.8 percent) and 4.0 rebounds in 24.6 minutes as a starter in the first nine games. He makes 51 percent of his attempts (23-45). After scoring 10 and 12 points in first two games, he has not reached double digits in the past 10 outings. He had four points, three rebounds and a season-high three assists against UC Irvine. At UCSB, he had three points and equaled a career-best seven rebounds. He was married to BYU All-American volleyball player Anna-Lena Smith Dec. 30 in Mesa, Ariz. He has scored in double figures five times this year and has led the team in rebounds three times (6 vs. UC Riverside, 9 at Denver, 11 at FIU). Rivers came off the bench against UC Irvine after starting the two previous games. Despite being weakened by the flu, he contributed five points and six rebounds in 11 minutes. He started his second straight game against UCSB but was 0-2 with four rebounds in 17 minutes. He played a season-high 31 minutes in his first start at Florida International and had double-double 10 points and season-high 11 rebounds. He scored eight points in 12 minutes at South Alabama. He scored game- and season-high 17 points against South Carolina State. Coming off the bench in the first nine games he averaged 8.8 ppg and is 4.3 rebounds, including 10 points versus Arizona State and 14 points in back-to-back games to open the year against UC Riverside and Southern Utah.

Nathan Cooper

He is coming off the bench this year after starting 23 of BYU's 28 games last year. He is averaging 7.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in 21 minutes and making 43 percent of his shots and team-best 28 of 32 free throws (.875). He has made a trey in four games. He and Michael Vranes received the coaches game ball for their effort against UC Irvine. Cooper had 14 points and four rebounds in a season-high 31 minutes. He scored BYU's first basket at UCSB five minutes into the contest and sparked an 8-0 run with a steal, forcing a turnover and handing out an assist. He finished with three points and three boards. He had five points, six rebound effort at FIU. He set a career high with seven assists at South Alabama. He scored a season- and team-high 15 points against Weber State, the third time he has reached double figures.

He is sharing point guard duties after playing shooting guard most of last year. Christensen scored 13 points, including a four-point play at UCSB. Against UCSB and Florida International he was 9-16 (.562) from the floor, 6-11 (.545) on treys, and 3-3 from the line while averaging 13.5 ppg. BYU Team Notables

Cougar Start among Best in Past 20 Years

BYU has achieved a 10-2 record for only the fourth time in the past 20 years and is off to its best start since 1991-92 when the Cougars also started the season with a 10-2 mark. BYU's best start was a 17-0 beginning to the 1987-88 season that had the Cougars, ranked No. 2 and coming off an 82-64 win over Utah, poised to overtake the No. 1 spot in the nation before an upset loss at Alabama-Birmingham. BYU also started 10-2 in 1980-81, the Danny Ainge-led team that went on to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Streaks

BYU has a three-game win streak and has won eight of its last nine. BYU's longest win streak of the year is five games. BYU's wins over Florida International and UC Santa Barbara are the first back-to-back non-conference road wins since the 1991-92 season (BYU won three straight non-conference away games that year). The two road wins also represent the first time BYU has won two straight road games since defeating San Diego State and Hawaii last year (the only time the Cougars accomplished the feat last year). BYU last won three straight road games in 1993-94 (Cougars had a six-game road streak in 1992-93). BYU is a perfect 7-0 at home this year and has won eight consecutive times at home including last year's regular season-ending win over UTEP (85-64). All eight wins have been by double-digit margins.

Cleveland vs. the Big West

Since Steve Cleveland took over the helm at BYU, the Cougars have played six games against Big West teams and have a 3-3 record. The Cougars are 2-0 this year after defeating UC Irvine (77-66) Wednesday and UC Santa Barbara (57-48) last week. Cleveland is 1-1 against Utah State and UC Irvine, 1-0 against UCSB and 0-1 against Boise State. Last year the Cougars split with Big West teams, winning at home against Utah State and falling on the road at Cleveland's alma mater UC Irvine. Saturday's game against Utah State is BYU's third straight game against a Big West opponent.

Numbers on the Road

BYU is 3-2 on the road this year, having already earned one more win in the opponent's home arena than all of last year (2-10 in true away games). The Cougars are scoring 69.2 for a 3.0 scoring margin. On the road, BYU is shooting .415, including .410 on threes, and .679 from the free throw line. BYU is being out rebounded 37.8-35.2 in its five away games. Mekeli Wesley averaged 17.3 points and six rebounds while leading BYU to a 2-1 record on its last road trip that included stops on the East and West coasts.
