MAUI -- BYU faces Stanford (listed No. 26) Tuesday at 11 a.m. HT (2 p.m. MST) in the second round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. The game is not being televised but the radio broadcast can be heard on KSL Newsradio 1160 a.m. or online at

Stanford is 1-1 on the season. The last time the two teams met was at the Las Vegas Showdown in December of 2001 when the Cougars upset the No. 13-ranked Cardinal. BYU owns a 4-1 record vs. Stanford and has won the last three meetings in the series, but the two teams have met only once since 1970.

The Cougars are coming off an 86-50 loss to No. 3 North Carolina in Monday's opening round while the Cardinal were upset by Tennessee Monday, 69-57. Tuesday's other games will match No. 15 Texas against Iowa in the winners bracket with host Chaminade playing No. 13 Louisville in the losing side of the bracket.

No. 25-ranked (coaches poll) Stanford, like North Carolina, opened the season at the Pete Newell Challenge in Oakland, Calif. The Cardinal defeated San Fransisco 93-83 prior to Monday's upset loss to Tennessee (69-57). Stanford returns three starters and a total of 10 lettermen from last year's 30-2 team that won the Pac-10 title with a 17-1 record. First-year coach Trent Johnson does have some holes to fill as the team's top three scorers -- Josh Childress, Matt Lottich, and Justin Davis -- are gone. Johnson, who coached Nevada to the Sweet 16 last year and has an 80-75 record in his seventh season, will look to preseason first-team All-Pac-10 pick Chris Hernandez to fill the void. Stanford is picked to finish third in the Pac-10 behind Arizona and Washington. Hernandez scored 10 points against Tennessee Monday along with forward Matt Haryasz while forward Dan Grunfeld led the Cardinal with 19 points and eight rebounds.
