LIHU'E, Hawai'i - BYU men's golf is in a tie for 12th place after the first round of the John H. Burns Intercollegiate on Wednesday.
"It was not a great day," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Hopefully we can put together better rounds in the next few days. Tommy hung in there and Rodgers played pretty well too. Those two helped us out. Hopefully we can come together as a team and shoot a decent score."
The Cougars are in a tie for 12th (+14) with Fresno State after the first 18 holes. No. 22 Cal leads the tournament in first place (-6). West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara is in 15th place (+20) while BYU - Hawai'i is in 16th place (+22).
Junior Tommy Higham led the team, finishing the first round in a four-way tie for 27th and shooting one-over-par.
"I hit the ball really well, which was good for me," Higham said. "As for the team, we have a lot to improve on. The course got a little harder because of the wind in the afternoon, so adjusting to that was difficult. If we get a few good rounds in, I think we will be all right."
BYU will play round two on Thursday starting at 8:30 a.m. HST at the Wailua Golf Course. Live stats will be available on the BYU men's golf schedule page.
