GOODYEAR, Arizona – Led by Jordan Rodgers, BYU men's golf is in a three-way tie for eighth place after the first round of the Desert Shootout on Thursday.

“Rodgers played pretty well today, so did CJ (Lee), which was not bad for his first college event," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We have a chance to go out and see if we can do better tomorrow. Hopefully we can come out a little stronger."

BYU is tied for eigth place (+1) with Nebraska and Long Beach State. After the first day, Kansas and Wichita State are tied for first place (-10).

Rodgers, a senior, is leading the Cougars after the first 18 holes, shooting three-under-par to end the day in a tie for 10th place.

"We just need to dig deep as a team to keep getting better," Rodgers said. "We are a good team, but we need to be more confident and believe that we can shoot low scores."

After the first day, Rodgers is the only BYU player in the top 20. Junior Tommy Higham is in a tie for 25th, shooting par. Freshman CJ Lee shot one-over-par to land in a tie for 36th.

Senior Mike Jurca is in a tie for 59th, shooting three-over-par, while fellow senior Cole Ogden shot an 80 (+8) to put him in 84th place.

The second round of the tournament will be played tomorrow. Live stats will be available on the BYU men’s golf schedule page.
