PROVO, Utah —After the first round of the Siegfried & Jensen Utah Open held at Riverside Country Club, current BYU junior Patrick Fishburn leads the field of competitors at 10-under-par.
Fishburn, who won the Utah State Amateur last month, shot an opening-round 62 on Friday on his home course.
The BYU golfer started off the round strong, shooting 7-under-par on the front nine. Fishburn eagled the par-5 seventh hole to reach 6-under-par. The junior finished his round shooting 3-under-par on the back nine, and birdied a total of nine holes on Friday.
BYU teammate CJ Lee is tied for 44th place after the first round of play. Lee shot even par for the day. Newcomers to the 2016-17 BYU squad Rhett Rasmussen and Peter Kuest sit in 16th and 31st, respectively. Zach Pritchard shot 9-over-par through 18 holes and is tied for 138th place.
Cougar alumni Jake Ellison shot 5-under-par through round one to finish the day tied for seventh place, while former Cougars Jordan Rodgers, Joseph Summerhays and Cole Ogden are tied for 16th place at 3-under-par.
The second round of the Utah Open will be played Saturday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. Fishburn will tee off at 1:00 p.m.
